So I have the Audioquest Dragonfly 1.2. Stop laughing, I picked this up a long time ago. I haven't used it in a quite awhile, as I have been mostly listening from a Modi 2, and now the Bifrost Multibit. So I just recently started playing around with it again.

The thing is, I'm starting to think it sounds like ass. That is, more ass-like than I think is reasonable at its price, etc. At any price, actually. My laptop out (Lenovo Thinkpad) sounds better. I mostly hear the treble as etchy and grainy ass.

Am I nutter? I know the Dragonfly is not well respected, but I am surprised that it seems to fall behind a laptop out.

Funny. When I first heard it (maybe at least two years ago), I thought it sounded OK. With my recent experience at the AudioQuest tables at the shows, I felt that thing sounded like ass. More like ass-like when I remembered it. Part of it is because there's much better stuff around today.

I did a direct comparison between the Dragonfly 1.2 and the Schiit Fulla some time ago and found the Dragonfly to have a lot of digital hash and weird artifacts in the treble. Some tracks seemed worse than others. "Grainy ass" seems like a reasonable descriptor. "Digititus" comes to mind for me - false detail and lack of true resolution. Other than being small, I didn't find it to be worth any consideration. Oddly enough, it reminded me a lot of the garbage DAC that is built in to the Woo WA7 that I used to own (the shame...the shame).

Oh gawd, AudioQuest shows off their Dragonfly hooked up into a WA7 at the shows. I keep saying... this is one of the reasons why Nighthawk impressions have been all over the place from "soft, veiled, goo" to "has potential".

The Nighthawk being fed by the WA7/Dragonfly was easily the worst demo I experienced at CanJam this past year. Gawd-awful. I actually felt bad for Skylar, as he seemed like a nice dude, and he clearly put a lot of work in to the headphone, but I digress...

Yeah, I think this is a big factor. It's interesting how much better the low-end stuff seems these days. I credit Schiit for this - all around raising the standards.

I definitely need one of these.

Yeah, that matches what I'm hearing. Weird treble artifacts, grainy assness - so this is what people mean by digititus.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone.
