All 3 options are my own observations.
Even a newly flashed OS will have the name set. For me fing seems to cache and retain the first name for a particular IP. My Ropieee system still shows up as Volumio in fing even though I switched the device months ago. It is odd that fing doesn't show names for you. I don't know if this could be caused by your router, we're getting beyond my LAN knowledge.
I'd do 2 or 3 on the router instead of modem, but yeah, power cycling it could help. A reset may be more hassle than it's worth (could require re-configuring the router for your network/internet access).
Weird. Everything is super clear and the pi even gets the Raspberry icon out of the box
Weird just noticed it says I have a range extender which I absolutely do not have.
Before naming them it either says "Volumio" or "Raspberry Pi"...can't remember which one but it definitely recognized it as something other than generic.
The fact that it recognizes one of your Pi boxes but not the other leads me to believe the problematic box isn't on the network. I'd follow the router/access point reset suggestions.
Unlikely, but the Pi itself could just have gone bad.
One thing to keep in mind with identifying devices on the network is it uses their MAC addresses of which a set range are assigned to different manufacturers. Some devices can be set to report a random one for privacy considerations so wouldn’t be recognized but it does seem odd that every one comes up as generic.
Try using Vernet instead of Fing
I use Advanced IP Scanner.
I stopped using SD cards with moOde. If your RPI is recent and it has a recent firmware version it should automatically boot from USB drive instead. My SD card slot has been empty for awhile. And it’s a lot faster to burn a new image on USB 3 drive. I don’t know if other images will work. I haven’t tried them.
Pi2AES > Holo May puzzle. Either with I2S HDMI, May alt 1 setting, or AES. When I start playing a 96/24 album, the May goes into LOCKING state for > 10s. Eventually it locks, but this does not seem right. No issues with RJ45 I2S to Morpheus or AES to Yggdrasil.
same occurrence using pi2AES hdmi I2S to Spring 3 KTE. only suggestions I’ve seen is to disable PLL which some report no difference in quality or use USB which PLL locks much quicker.

This is not a quirk or anything abnormal. This is the function of how a pll works. Simple requires time for locking onto a signal. If you don’t mind having the signal as is without jitter attenuation than simply disable the PLL. But the function of the PLL is to attenuate jitter down 80dB. Or noise floors of -170dB typically. The cost is the longer locking time. However no sacrifices are made for the latency! As it’s still near zero latency.
Usb runs in master mode on the pll so has fastest locking times. Spdif, or super dated tech has slower locking times by default, and no way around this. However spdif has never sounded better when using the pll with it.

Can you disable the PLL? I am assuming that is what the "LOCKING" status means the PLL is trying to lock

Yes, the PLL might reduce jitter, but would you be able to tell? And also remember that the theoretical maximum SNR of 24-Bit data is 144db. Which is what the PI2AES gives you.
Thanks for reminding us of the @GoldenOne DDC review, I had watched it but I had forgotten those details. I'll try turning off the May PLL.
An alternate partial cheat with Ropieee is to turn "Dynamic Audio Power Mgt" off on the Advanced tab of the Ropieee Web interface. That keeps the lock between the I2S output and the May even when music is not playing.
Great hint. As a HW guy I was not aware of what the SW might be doing to the WM8804 (the underlying AES transmitter chip) from a power management point of view. The amount of power it might save is so small as to not be worth it IMHO. Unless it's part of a more global power down of the Pi and/or the CPU.
Does anyone know if other players do something like this? This might be a clue to dropouts some folks are experiencing.
I've used this setting also with RoopieeeXL, but with a 30min time value.
if not streaming music for 30min it likely means I've left the room and don't mind a "resync" upon next listening session.
The saga continues. This protocol really hates me.
My speakers Pi2AES just stopped working all of a sudden, And it was the more dependable Pi2AES, not needing a reset much at all unlike my headphones Pi2AES.
Rebooting didn't help, so I re-flashed Moode from a fresh download. None of the generic IP addresses showed up. For some reason you all get a nice RPI symbol in Fing, I do not I just get a bunch of generic IP addresses and have to try to load each one until Moode loads with one of them
so none of them loaded Moode. I re flashed the card again, none of them loaded Moode.
I reflashed it a third time, and none of them loaded Moode.
then I tried flashing Ropiee. None of the IP addresses loaded.
then I reset my router, bought new SD cards and flashed Moode onto it.
None of the IP addresses load.
Do I need to just send this Pi2AES into Pi2 Design to have it looked at? I'm at a loss at this point.
The Pi2AES is just a sound card for a RaspberryPi. If you can’t even locate your RPi in your network, I doubt Michael can do anything for you. You could pull the Pi2AES board off and it should work identically as far as being able to connect to it and load up the OS interface. This seems like an RPi/OS networking issue, unless maybe it’s a power issue? Did you try powering the RPi by itself (pull the pin on the Pi2AES board so you can power the RPi seperately)? You just need a basic 5V usb wall charger with micro USB, like a charger for a cell phone.

Ok I have a 3b, so it’s micro. Check to see which one you have, but the point is a 5v phone charger with the right end should power the RPi by itself.
