Timbre is what Sony players do really well. It may lean towards organic category but never unreal/tinny/lacking body/sibilant that most other players sound like.
I've had experience with yth 5 yr old A, S, X series only so cannot say if this applies to zx2 as well. However on a short listen to zx100 , the timbre at least was pleasing.

Maybe a naive question but can you leave your DAP (ZX2) plugged in much of the time while playing and save battery life expectancy as with a laptop?

Been through a number of sources in a really short span of time with the Andro including iPhone 6, DragonFly Red, GoV1 and V2, Sony RH1, Ak Jr. and just now ordered a ZX2. I guess the Andro's OI sensitivity makes it kind of a bitch to get pairings/impressions down pat as it can change radically depending on what it's plugged into. My current favored pairing is the Dragonfly Red. It's incredibly smooth and non fatiguing, has really great slam, and soundstage/depth proportions, but I feel dynamic range is compressed, air is nullified (treble timbre is really excellent though - super smooth and weighty), and upper mids feel off to me (female singers feel off timbre). I'm hoping the ZX2 is the ticket for me cause I seriously don't need to hoard any more sources. All else fails, I'll probably just sell everything and rock the DFR as it's currently the most involving of the lot.

I left it plugged in during burn in.

It gets exponentially difficult to add more devices for a comparison. I tend to do a lot of one vs one in these comparisons to arrive at the conclusions in the heptagon charts.

The ZX2 is an extension of the ZX100 sound. More powerful, more precise, and significantly more nuanced. I have gravitated toward the Sony units precisely of what you have said about their sound. Personally, I cannot tolerate Chi-Fi treble nasty lean kind of sound anymore.

But does playing while charging avoid using the battery's 500 (or so) lifetime charges/discharges?

Someone convince me on burn in. Even if such thing existed, chances are if I don't like something pre burn, I'm not going to like it post burn.

    Hmm. No idea.

One of the welcome screens on the ZX2 suggested 100 hours of burn in. Something to do with the OSCON caps in the power supply circuit.

Points taken. I still won't mind it though. Burn in shouldn't be a thing to be considered when evaluating gears.

Would like to see V2 vs Mojo they are not dedicated DAP and also in similar price range here in EU.

I think I noticed burn in on my zx2... Think being the key word. Really was one of my favorite daps ever. Just wish I could have rooted it and installed Viper4Android.

Just listened to the zx2 again at best buy... Wow. It sounds so good. Great synergy with my Tralucent P5, plus root is available now too for it I've read. I was going to get the Cowon S, but I'm seriously considering another zx2. I forgot how great it sounded and with the P5, best I've ever heard. I'm in love!!

Any recommendations on a 2.5 balanced to 3.5 TRRS adapter to use between the Andromedas and ZX2?

Thanks. Isn't 90 bucks for an adapter a little excessive?

Anyone try ZX2 to Andromeda balanced (or quasi balanced or whatever the ZX2 actually is)? Any difference?

Not yet. Ravi got a ZX2 and should be trying out balanced cables soon. I don't have time to source parts and make them. I'm too cheap to buy cables and too busy playing Pokemon Go.

I'm wondering this too, is it really balanced or not? I'm planning on using it with a balanced portable amp in the future.

Wonder what kind of secret tech Sony used in the Zx2, it doesn't have the digital nastiness that typical sigma delta dacs have.. and you can discern high res files from normal pcm file on this dap, Also the timbre reproduction is as good as any R2R dac!
