FS: JAR 800 V2

I wanted to add to the JAR love around here, and offer up a chance to someone to snag Jupiter's penultimate creation, the JAR 800. I am only selling as I ended up with an extra pairs of these while chasing different tonalities/serial numbers. This is the pair that got swapped into the loaner tour when the V1 JAR 800 was discontinued.



I will be doing a lengthier write-up on the JAR 800 revisions I have heard when I get my act together to compile all my notes into something comprehensible but want to provide a bit of background about this particular pair. First off, this is the V2 version of the JAR 800 mod (a nomenclature that will eventually be dropped as this is now the final and only version of the mod he is offering going forward). Many of the early impressions of the JAR 800 were of the V1 version, which was remarkable in its own right, but a bit different than this approach. Will elaborate more later, but think of the V1 as the ultimate version of a "fixed" HD 800. This V2 version is more of a transformation of the 800 that I would say chases the "super HD 6X0" type tuning people have longed for, but while preserving the technical performance of the HD 800.

This pair is in the 21k serial number range and was personally selected by Jupiter from various 800 serials/pairs to maximize the performance of the revisions that became the V2 version. It was actually extremely difficult for me to decide between keeping this pair or the LSN (2k range) 800 I personally selected to be modded recently based on stock performance. I wish I could afford to keep both, as they both have their strengths. The LSN one Jupiter made preserves more of the air/stage the HD 800 is known for and could be viewed as a super 600-type sound but with clear 800 DNA. The 21k JAR 800 that is for sale here is more transformed. The bass is stunning, like throw away any preconceived notions you have about HD 800 bass and buckle up. Upright bass in particular is just so darn captivating from these. This pair is more of a super 650 sort of sound, and is more intimate sounding compared to the typical HD 800 stage. The benefit is the staging sounds more natural and not at all artificial like the 800 can sound sometimes.

You will see from the photos (album here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/N6R2ZoDjHatLDd7MA) that this pair is not a looker, so those sensitive to aesthetics should look elsewhere. Lots of paint peeling and scratches, but despite the paint quality, this is a very fresh feeling/sturdy build pair. You are not paying for the looks on these though, all about that sweet sweet sound. Plenty of life on the pads. This pair will come in a Pelican 1400 case with JAR sticker, and with an XLR cable (was a stock cable originally, but was nicely re-terminated by someone at some point). Will include a stock Sennheiser XLR to SE 1/4 adapter as well.

Asking $2000 total for Friends, $2100 for contributors, $2200 for randos to me via Paypal (I will cover fees if you prefer G&S and insured shipping CONUS). I know that price may shock folks, but those that have priced the mod, supplying a pair, and shipping back and forth to Korea know you are getting a solid deal here. This exact pair is in the top two hp I've ever had the pleasure of listening to (from LCD-4 to Utopia and everything in between, except I haven't heard many eStats or RAAL)... and I say this as an inveterate 800 hater.

It is an entire world unto its own.

It can create new soundscapes from old tracks, it can parallel park in a single, elegant, fluid movement, it attacks like a great white shark, and in less mock-poetic terms, it can literally rattle your head w bass.

It is a perfectly realized hp.

If you even dislike 800s, don't discount these. They are in the room beyond the door of endgame/summit-fi, one that you never even knew was there.

(Oh, and the other top hp? It's a JAR of course.)

 

I think anyone who has listened to this specific pair would agree that the "Super 650" people are always chasing, well, it's finally here. Take the best parts of the 800 and the best parts of the 650, feed em some drinks and leave em alone for the night, and this is the result.

Curt has always been a 600 guy, so to me it makes sense that he ended up with the Super 600 instead of the Super 650.

But if you're one of those people who see the Super 650 as your Holy Grail, White Whale, etc. Well, now's your chance. AFAIK there's only one of these in the world with this specific tonality, and it's the one being offered here.
