STORY: Right after I bought them back in 2017, one “button” that holds a side of the headband broke.
@Bill-P helped me “Franken-fix” the headphone. (Thank you, Bill!)

    RESTO-MOD?: With HE-4XX cups/pads, 4-pin XLR cable, and HE-560 headband.

HEADBAND: Much more comfortable. Bought a brand new HE-560 “Hybrid Headband” like this one:
    http://store.hifiman.com/index.php/hybrid-headband.html

EARCUPS/PADS: New paintjob. The ear cups and pads are from an HE-4XX. Matte dark blue paint. (Including WOOD cups for HE-5LE if you wanna go woody.)

CABLE: Modded jacks. Cable uses more common 2.5mm plugs (earlier HE-4XX connectors) and terminates in 4-pin XLR.

    EXTRAS:
    • Brand new HE-5LE wood replacement cups (and buttons) with the old screw-in HiFiMAN connectors
    • Slappa Hard Case
    • Original (broken) O.G. HE-500 headband parts
    • 4-pin XLR cable with the old screw-in HiFiMAN connectors
ASKING: $450 EDIT: $425 including shipping

(EDITED 4/22/2022: Sold the wood cups separately)

I miss my 500s so much. If I had the spare change right now, I'd be all over these.

Notice any definite sound differences with all the changes?

^I think, if anything...the pads might change the sound a little but the headband and cups probably don't. I am not sure where the O.G. pads went. I can go through my ear pads bin and see if I have the O.G. pads but they sound great after the transplant. When Bill fixed them for me, I think the HE-4XX pads sounded as good or better and were newer/in better condition. (There was an office HE-4XX with a bad driver lying around at Massdrop and we used it for the parts. I bought this HE-500 personally to keep trying to do a re-boot of the O.G. HE-500 and to be able to compare for development. Plus, these do not come up often.) Whoever buys these will see that they have barely had any use since I have owned them. I got the headband as a new replacement part from Adorama.

I think these just have a really nice tonal balance and are great all-rounders. Good out of lots of amps. The HE-500 is nice and linear-sounding to me with great mids and natural-sounding bass. The HE-560 just never had normal/natural-sounding bass to me. The O.G. HE-6 at it's best has ridiculous bass and sub-impact but can have a bit of an upper mids peak and likes a good system to get the most out of them.

Also regret selling my HE500 many moons ago. I fondly remember the excellent, tasty bass. GLWS!
