Try the free trial of Cyberlink Powerdirector.

Cheaper than most but quite good.

Adobe Premiere CC or Avid Media Composer. Final Cut Pro only works on Macs. I can't say which one is better nor can I describe their nuances. Last time I used Premiere was near the turn of the last century; and it wasn't intuitive and required a learning curve. The Avid systems I observed seemed easier to pick up.

Those three seem to be the ones used at the big Studios' post production facilities I've visited. They might be overkill for what you need to do. They are probably the "best" and "industry standard", but are expensive and I think most of have gone to the subscription model (which is both good and bad).

iMovie actually isn't bad, but obviously you need a Mac. If you are serious about doing video editing, you should think in terms of the total system rather than the software. A lot of the video editing software works better on the Macs.

Sony Movie Studio is quite good for the price (about $28 - $30 on Steam), my partner uses it almost exclusively for our clients' pre-wedding videos.

You could go with Adobe's Creative Cloud, there should be fairly tight integration between Illustrator, PhotoShop, Audition, AfterEffects & Premiere. That would cover pretty much all of the production software necessities. It's not cheap per month, but if you're working on a specific project then it might be worth it.

Or if you want something lightweight and easy to use, there's Sony Vegas.

I checked out the adobe suggestion you mentioned anetode - I don't really need the entire suite, just the video editing. Is that Adobe Premier Pro for video editing like purrin suggested?

What I am looking to do is record video reviews of musical instruments such as guitars etc. I have a number of companies that will loan me guitars etc for video reviews, but they want me to show them some of my work first, which I have nne. But I do have good guitars, basses and keyboards that I can do video reviews for that hopefully will let me get some loaner guitars/equipment to do video reviews for.

Depending on your needs, I have had success with the free Windows Movie Maker. I also use the Cyberlink stuff (not free) as well, and it is... ok. It seems hard to find really good software in this space without paying a lot.

Adobe Premiere is great, but it has a learning curve and might be too much if you're just starting out. Think about it this way, do you want something like Photoshop or something like Paint? Windows Movie Maker will suffice if you want to just put something together, Vegas or Cyberlink stuffs will add more features and functionality (easy to import video, easy to publish online on youtube, etc.).

thank you anetode for your suggestion. Yes I will be just starting out with video editing, so perhaps Cyberlink or Vegas might be the best choice for a beginner like me.

The best thing to do is get your feet wet, and try a free one, to get a sense of what they are like. Even MS movie maker can do a lot in terms of editing and transitions. I think the cheap ones are just harder to work with and have some limitations that frustrate, but they can work.
