Magnum V4 drivers in Joe Grado HP1000 metal cups

These are the old Magnum V4 drivers in Joe Grado HP1000 metal cups and TTVJ flat pads. I'm taking these measurements for reference since @M3NTAL has sent me Magnum V6 drivers. I will have V6 measurements shortly (UPDATE: see next post).

More extended bass compared to V4, but in the end, too bass much with TTVJ flat pads. I suspect the SR60/80 cush pads would work best, but we might get too much of the John Grado sound.

The V6 drivers have three venting holes at the back of the driver open. No wonder that they are too bassy for flats. You could try to pop a leather or velour pad on top of the S-or L-cushion (don't know how flats would do) and combine it with some serious internal damping. You would have to play around a bit to find the right pads, but in the end you might be in for a pleasant surprise.

Here is a link to the Symphones designed cups that were modeled for the V6 drivers - http://symphones.com/page-v6/

They also recommend running the bowl pads with that cup, but experimenting is always encouraged.

Put a set of Magnum V6 into some ebony cups, mounted modded HM5 pleather pads (with a 5mm ring of felt underneath to allow for some controlled leakage) and applied some internal and front damping. Pics and measurements below. This set is sounding really fast and clean. Bass is strong, but could be tighter, of course. Driver size is the limiting factor, I guess.
I just keep asking myself why they still stick to those miserable foam pads!? The V6 has been designed for those, but their full potential can only be reached with other pads. Then, however, you have to tame the bass with damping.

Wow, that's really nice. I still have some of your cups and pads. I should probably try to do something like this before I send them back to @M3NTAL

StratoKOSSter pads won't be of much use, I am afraid. I tried them myself, but they did not perform well. I had the best results with Beyerdynamic DT-250 pads (although these were on the bright side) or pleather pads like HM5 pads, BUT ALWAYS ON SOME FOAM/FELT RINGS UNDERNEATH. You will have to apply different amounts of internal and front damping to achieve a flat response. This is definitely not easy to achieve and requires quite some tinkering, but it is possible with the help of a measurement rig and well worth the effort. The drivers are VERY good, basically. Just look at the CSD plot, there is no sign of Grado-like ringing. They simply cannot shine enough in a 'Gradoesque' setup.

Well I only have one HM5 pad lying around. I'll send these back. I need to concentrate on the Franken-Sennheiser research project.

I'm not in a huge rush to get them back - if you need time with them or want to try other things, I'm cool with it.
