MQA files for bankruptcy protection

I can see objects for mixing, must make it a piece of cake.

I don't understand why one needs objects on playback...?

 

Has Tidal really given up on MQA?

 

They're noticeably not adding any new releases in Max quality as MQA - instead they're all FLAC, seemingly. Stuff that was already available in Max quality as MQA before they announced a change is oftentimes still only in MQA, although I have seen a few releases that were MQA only transition to FLAC in Max quality. I don't know what their plans are there (transitioning the whole catalog that was in Max quality MQA to FLAC or just some of it).

edit: here’s a more in-depth explanation on Reddit. Basically, Max FLAC is 24 bit/HiRes, Max MQA is MQA. If an album has Max MQA only, then High quality for that album will also be (folded) MQA. If the album has Max FLAC, the High quality will be its own separate 16 bit lossless file(s). Lastly, if an album doesn’t have Max quality available at all and only is listed as High, it will be 16 bit lossless (non-MQA). Pretty obnoxious to try and parse…:

Because in immersive audio sounds don't get assigned channels, they get spatial coordinates. Thus the soundfield can be rendered by any number of speakers. Obviously more is better because stuff going on behind you will be tricky to play with a regular stereo pair.

 

Very true, but to the guys credit he did pretty well given the needlessly complicated subject.

The neatest thing I learned was tangential - the existence of VB-Audio's "virtual cable" software
