question: if I set my USB driver (Windows->sound card settings->properties->Advanced) for my DAC to default to 32-bit/192k (it's max), what happens when I play 16/44 source material? Does it play at its native 16/44 or is it over sampled?
I can't decide what to put this setting at.

Your computer re-samples before it outputs.

The Windows sound mixer is the default playback path. Those audio settings will cause Windows to add the bitdepth and up the sample rate to the settings you specify. Generally speaking, adding bitdepth is not a bad thing, and in fact helps if you use the software to control volume, as it gives headroom so that you don't lose bits when you turn down the volume. Upsampling is generally not useful because the samples are getting processed unnecessarily.

A lot of people recommend using wasapi or asio because these paths bypass any Windows mixer processing and deliver the unadulterated samples to the output to your dac.

Unfortunately, the schiit drivers aren't quite working well for the Bifrost Multibit at the moment. I don't have an option of the driver other than the default windows one.

Schiit may release a specific driver for the mulitbit. Have you tried using the USB driver for the regular Bifrost and Bifrost Uber? Windows will automatically install a driver from Windows 7 up to Windows 10. But you can still try the drivers located at Schiit on the link below.

Yeah, I've tried everything under the sun. I'm still working with Nick from Tech Support.

May I ask what music player you are using to playback you audio files? I will do some research on your behalf to try to help you solve your issue. ;)

    I'm using Foobar2000.
    I don't think it's a player software issue.
I'm going USB directly to the Bifrost (Bifrost Multibit). It's just that the Schiit drivers fail to install and recognize it.
I have been able to get older drivers to work, which gets me sound. The new ones (1.16) aren't working though.

this. Also using ds with a schiit multibit basically defeats the purpose.

Hmmm, might be clashing drivers from other dacs or audio interfaces, which dacs you had used? I would uninstall drivers first using device manager. Also are you plugging the Bifrost into a usb 2.0(not 3.0) port?

No. No other DACs. I got the 1.03 drivers working. Sticking with those
