Most of the well-know manufacturers (Seagate, WD, Hitachi, Toshiba) are about the same overall. It's a crap-shoot with specific model numbers and/or sizes being better than others. The most reliable method is to buy two of the more cost-effective models from one of the major manufacturers and back content up to both.
Thanks! I'm ordering two hgst Hdds. I noticed there was a one star review on Amazon starting with: "Because of the Backblaze data on HGST drives, I ordered two..." but it does seem to vary from model to model.
From data center experience... don't build arrays with disks from the same lot. If you're building an array, easiest way to do this buy something like half Seagate, half WD for your array.
