Listening to some old 4-track cassettes from h.school, realized that while this hobby has helped me enjoy well-recorded music all the more, it's also diminished my ability to enjoy recorded music for music's sake. Wish it were more like food where I sometimes enjoy a Shin Ramen as much as a Momofuku.
I find that after I take a 2+ week trip to remote areas of the NE Indian jungle where I'm completely cutoff from music, even modest equipment sounds spectacular. Short of repeating that sort of isolation, maybe a 2 week media fast would fix you right up.
For sure, gear breaks (both voluntary and involuntary) have helped me appreciate both the music and gear more. I also think it's generally true that yesterday's crappy recordings sounded better than today's (primarily due to loudness wars). in that sense, none of us can ever really go back, and you just hope better recording practices return.
