Hidden inherent racism is more scary to me because you don't know where people really stand. Too many historical "gaffes" makes me think they aren't gaffes.
"Nearly seventy." (I'm practising saying that) and if I was to do a word association test, most of my responses to "black" would be negative. Some even abusive. The fight against racism in oneself takes a lifetime. But those who are in complete denial are not ever even going to start. There /are/ racist bones in my body: but at least I know it.
Imagine being a small kid, speaking you native language fluently (Dutch in my case) and an elderly cheese-head (kaaskop, Dutch person of age) is surprised by my flawless Dutch. I still remember it, I wish I had learnt sarcasm at that age...
