My father passed away just before the pandemic started. As his executor it was only then that I appreciated how well he had planned in advance and how much it made my life easier. Then with that in mind and with the pandemic going it encouraged me to update all my own final planning too. Not a fun thing to think about, but more people should. It is a good gift to leave.
I had a similar experience to @Kernel Kurtz and am grateful for my father's foresight. Even something as simple as having access to passwords is invaluable. As a starting point, this is helpful: https://getyourshittogether.org/checklist/. @Deep Funk, I hope you're doing ok.
Before that happens - while the person still has all their marbles - get powers of attorney or whatever your local equivalent is. If activated by a medical opinion that the person becomes unable to make decisions for/look after themselves, you (or whoever is attorney) can make decisions and start to tidy up their affairs so that when it comes to estate time, the process will be smoother & quicker.
