Midrange can be annoying depending on chain. HD600 is unpleasant on most solid state amps I've tried it on for example (most recently, Schiit Ragnarok). HD650 was a much better match there. However, on a tube amp I typically preferred the more balanced presentation of the HD600 over the HD650.
I love the 600s. I actually find them close in detail and midrange goodness to the HD800s. When I want that more intimate vocal presence, they're my go to. You could also try the ZMF suede pads. They bring a bit more space and bass to the sound without messing up what makes them great.
