The distinction between white collar crime and violent crime is depressing. If he gets out in 18.5 years, he will statistically have more than half his life left, despite stealing ~8 billion dollars and causing untold harm to dozens, if not hundreds, of victims.
The judge was explicit in describing him as not understanding what he did was immoral, this he might very well repeat. Given Madoff, I'm perlexed why he did not maximize sentence.
With good behavior, he would still serve a minimum of 21 years - the 85% rule for Federal sentencing. But he's not barred from any similar type of activity once he's out which is a shame.
