It started out with real, practical advice on how to get decent sound from a PC. Windows, in particular, made it quite difficult back then. And the low-fi standard was Soundblaster, the even-lower-fi option was built-in or unbranded sound card.

Maybe it was inevitable that those who "could hear the difference" between one disk drive and another, etc, would end up there.

I had a 5V iFi sitting around that I use on the Pi2AES side, and stock one on the router side

ditto - cheapest 5v ifi on the pi2aes side, stock on the other. I was never really a believer in this stuff, but I am now. Might be the biggest bang for the buck improvement I've made to my rigs
