Be careful with that. In the early 90s my then girlfriend's Dad and I bought identical Sony ES receivers on closeout. The big feature to me was being "Heavily biased in Class A amp sections". After being on for a while, they were uncomfortable to hold my hand on the vents on top.
He started wanting to put his in a closed rack. I kept telling him to leave it on top of the rack and why. One day he said his receiver was sounding awful. He had put it in the closed rack. It was totally messed up. Mine still sounds great.
@Dino It has auto shutoff. It shutoff a few times, and I felt it, was very hot. @ButtUglyJeff I cleaned it recently, main problem was it was on its side, no vents at new "top", and only 1" of breathing room on the "sides" where the vents are.
I think I'm just going to put some computer fans in it.
@DigMe They like the speaker set up I now have, can play music. And mostly good music too. Have not found anyone else who is that into hifi yet, but most think its interesting. Once I get into my acoustics cources more, and the acoustics club meeting, I should find more hifi people.
"It is proper for now, because otherwise it would just turn off."
Noooo! Heat reduces the life of electronics. Just because its cut out hasn't out-cutted doesn't mean it is happy. You can get quite unhappy before you actually scream, right? And you wnt to live long? So does your receiver.
@Thad E Ginathom It doesn't matter much, I got it on Craigslist for $30 and the HDMI inputs are broken. I am going to leave it properly out in the open until I set up a fan cooling system
