Gewurztraminer and seasonal nostalgia made me fire up the tape deck again. Like many things inspired by those two together, it wasn't a good idea.

Not the Sony ceramic tapes, you could literally beat someone to death with one oh them.

I was just a kid during the cassette era. How did the sound quality stack up to other formats?

Music from a small box: truncated FR, compressed dynamics. The kids today who profess to like it for its 'analog' sound are probably used to the compression and mistake lack of treble for 'smoothness'.

Actually, it wasn't *that* bad. But it wasn't that good either and they were often mechanically unreliable and would make birds' nests inside your player.

I used to record scratched LPs to cassette. They couldn't handle anything near the dynamic of the scratch, which toned it down just a fraction, and I didn't have to wince for my stylus when I played them.

Thing was... the party tape, the compilation for your girl-/boy-friend... very social things, cassettes!

And then the early days of really portable audio.

They definitely have a place in history.

The ease of copying is what I remember most. The tangled rats nest ranks a close 2nd.

I used to do the same - taping LPs for the car and for portability, and compilations. Yes, they have a place in history - where they should stay. Having said that, I'm going to play an old compilation now...
