Music from a small box: truncated FR, compressed dynamics. The kids today who profess to like it for its 'analog' sound are probably used to the compression and mistake lack of treble for 'smoothness'.
Actually, it wasn't *that* bad. But it wasn't that good either and they were often mechanically unreliable and would make birds' nests inside your player.
I used to record scratched LPs to cassette. They couldn't handle anything near the dynamic of the scratch, which toned it down just a fraction, and I didn't have to wince for my stylus when I played them.
I used to do the same - taping LPs for the car and for portability, and compilations. Yes, they have a place in history - where they should stay. Having said that, I'm going to play an old compilation now...
