Google bought DoubleClick in 2007. It's been slowly going downhill for everyone after that. There was some competition around up to 2016. There's basically no competition when it comes to web publishing.

I figure the unauthorized "experiments" is Google trying to recoup money lost from advertising expenditures that have moved in the direction of TikTok, Instagram, Amazon, etc.

Ok. In its field it is a monopoly basically. I mean, all independent websites go to this group. That's nuts.

I am not happy about it. What If I dont want to use Google platform for Ads..? Also. Donations arent the same as being in the Ads loop.

Ok.. So one can turn to alternatives. IME Facebook and Ig marketing works but I dont find being on the platform practial for myself. I can do some ads there and give the account over since there is no valuable content on the platform besides providing Ads.. Its an Ads magazine that should not need an account to be viewed since I am not buying stuff Every day. Like for real.

What I dont get is - 1000x norma size companies eating up small companies and basically eliminating them. Like.. Ppl have critizised MS but they all do the same. My generation US content creators/tech news have been vocal about it, also the international FOSS / Linux community.

Github is with MS now.. Usually, it seems the new owners can do whatever with their small companies.

Zucker showed the way, buy everything competiting and shove it into one app.

    -------
I am happy we have companies like Steam (Valve) who actually serve the best intrest of their client base.

You can run most titles native equivalent on the Linux / Arch L platform with Proton layer now. (This is possible with AMD , Nvidia driver might take years.to catch up). This is what makes Steam Deck possible.

Not sure, but I think MS was doing it while Zuck was still in nappies.

    <a quick google>

No, even before that. Since before he was a smear on the bed sheet. MS-Dos: 1981. Zuck: 1984. Trouble is, of course, he is still a smear on a bed sheet . But a rich and powerful one.

Google is just scum. The world thought it had learnt the lesson of Internet Explorer, but it hadn't. Now far too many people are writing stuff that will only run properly in Chrome, and they have new scheme for keeping control of us and the information about us via a browser which people may not have an alternative to. They want to lock us in, and lock out our ad blockers. Scum.

I use Pale Moon. At least, 99% of the time. But, occasionally, I just have to fire...

<Is it a coincidence that my machine just crashed?**>

    ...up Chrome occasionally. Reluctantly.

    **LOL

My OG concern was.. Its has been a long going saying. "Internet" is free. So Its seems Google now is trying to make it very limited, in other words, they are making chrome based on Ads interests. This is at least couple of tech news & organizations claim.

So, I think people who want to keep internet "independent" need to look elsewhere now. Firefox and maybe new upcoming projects.

Latest Firefox is a solid browser. I have been using FF and its branches for couple of years. Its all good. Chrome and FF trade blows in benchmarks, performance differs benchmark to benchmark.

Chrome (and Android) have always primarily existed as web advertising distribution platforms. They don’t directly earn Google revenue. If Google’s web ad business falls apart, Google wouldn’t have any reason to keep spending millions on browsers and operating systems. We’re not Google’s customers, the advertisers are.

Point is the same. They are actively limiting Internet - Their Browser capabilties. Read latest Arstechnica article on it. It isnt just my opinion.

Like many topics , it is multi faceted, but the concern is, Internet tech is moving in one direction, where company A decides what's going on in your living room. If there was no FF we would be in trouble. We walk on a tight rope here in regards to keeping the Internet open ( not single companies business intersts)

Id argue, also, that the average Online citizens computer/IT skills have declined. The client base is going to decide whats the status quo and I dont like where its going. Its moving to smarphone - a smarphone is not a tool for pros, its a consumption device first, and yes it has some useful capabilities.. My concern is that since the average is smartphone users, the openess , the standard is going to be lowered. TikTok , Ig, heck even FB has brainwashed people away from intelligent debate on Real net Forums like this one. So the trends are oposite of intelligent open net.

I guess a healthy trend is small medium companies are droping SaaS( or the less practical ones) because no one wants added monthly costs. If you send invoices to people, it better be worth it.

Also, AI tools arent a magical educational creative devices.
Person who does not know anything about subject matter, the foundations, is going to ask dumb questions from ai and get dumb answers. AI can be useful, yes. Better than random digital info consumption. So its Ok I guess.. but can lead to know it all's.

    It is what it is.

On the positive side, I find that there are near endless options for independent devs to work on project and create new ones.
