The strange thing is that there is an Italian version of this same commercial where a white Italian man comes out of the washer as black. Just search for "coloured is better." The racist connotation isn't as strong.

I changed it. Can vote for multiple items now.

Chinese see stuff like this as harmless because they don't have preconceptions of black people and didn't enslave black people like USA.

I remember this from when I was a kid in Taiwan.

    That commercial is offensive.

At the same time I could not resist to chuckle because Chinese advertisers do not care. They want a reaction, they want their message to be effective so f**k context and history. If they could make Mona Lisa action figures a Chinese anime series to sell the dolls would already exist.

Do you know what is worse? In the West advertisers are not much different. Thing is certain topics are avoided because colonialism, World War I & II and social groups with influence can decapitate the marketing effort.

In the end though Bill Hicks said enough:

I understand the need for marketing but I prefer specifications and factual information.

To Chinese, this context and history is not theirs. It's western white euro-centric context and history. China didn't go around the world colonizing, subjugating, and enslaving "darkies". You'd be surprised how Chinese (who live in Asia) have a much less stained view of black people than Westerners, despite how liberal some Westerners may profess to be.

P.S. What I actually find most racist is white Westerners feeling that they need to teach Easterners of what is proper and what is not without understanding that the rest of world does not revolve around how the West thinks.

Fully agreed. The European superiority complex has damaging effects to the extent that certain Western organisations and states turn a blind eye to their own grey and black pages in history. I am Dutch and for years the Dutch government has been all about "you are doing it wrong" to certain countries yet for decades they remained silent about past colonialist issues and certain war practices. Human rights my gluteus maximus, clean up your own street first.

Besides that, I still detest most marketing including the commercial you shared.

Sure, she can take him home to meet her folks now--but his dick shrank two inches in the dryer and odds are he's still never gonna be a doctor. Makes you feel bad for the guy.

That ad, lol, don't know what to say, deeply inappropriate. There're many black people living in Guangzhou without any id (getting a Chinses green card is impossible). And that tooth paste is one of the most popular in China and I did some research they've sold this tooth paste since 1933, before WW2...

There is actually nothing racist about an asian woman preferring an asian man over a black man.

If you think that's racist it's most likely because *YOU* have a low opinion of black people and are projecting that onto the ad.

On a separate note many asians really are racist, no joke.

My take on it? I think the ad company knew exactly what they were doing and skimmed the razor's edge on purpose... and it worked.

lol y'all are terrible. In all seriousness though, having lived and traveled in East Asia for a few years as a non-white/Asian person, I think it's definitely debatable whether or not the exportation of some of the politics of race in the US/Europe to the rest of the world, have or haven't been inherited or at least made aware of to Chinese and other East Asian peoples. I think this is especially debatable in the case of younger people in East Asia.
