If you have to add the suffix "science" or "engineer" to your study or profession, you probably didn't study a science and aren't an engineer.

I'm a software engineer who studied computer science...

Back to 2 channel stereo. Some have said that the Martin Logan Balanced Force Subs the best. Better than the REL. The pics that Martin Logan shows of the driver shows something that doesn't show me a lot of available movement ability. How is this possible?

The Teddy Bears is my Momma's collectable stuff. Found them to absorb sound quite well. I take care of my elderly mother at 85. I promised her that when she got too old to take care of herself, that I would not put her in a home. Moved to Florida. Waves suck big time. Stopped surfing all together and gained 100 pounds. Oh well. It's family, and that's what you do.

If everyone agrees with DigiMe, I will go away for a week and post my results of Mark Levinson and CD Transport with Coax connection. You make the call.

My respect for you went quite a bit up north. Cheers! :piratemug:

I've heard Martin Logans, but TBH they were not exactly my cup of tea. I heard them out of a Mcintosh tube amp deal @ Best Buy. Not optimal conditions of course. But they sounded a bit thin to me. On the other hand, they do seem to present some detail in certain areas and perhaps bring about their own house sound.

For subs the SVS cylinders look awesome. A friend of mine has a 15" driver HSU I think. And he is a very happy camper.

As far as running you out. Just relax. Sometimes it's good to do more reading than writing and merge with the Matrix. Or something like that.

I have seen this brand many times. But don't know people that actually own them. I have been looking at the REL higher end Gibraltar G-1 and G-2 to be honest. I in the scheme of things would get a wider and taller Martin Logan panel and a higher end REL sub before anything else IMHO. Just love the way REL adds and doesn't try to change the presentation.

Well REL does have it's reputation for sure.

I would have to bother my friend for an audition of his Hsu. Or just go to Hsu headquarters (again) which for me are about 15 min from work. The workmanship on the high end Hsu's is impeccable. They are freaking beasts though.

My friend's house cracks and trembles with his sub. Still, he's shooting for a DIY 18" deal. He kind of OCDs with subs. He is into pipe organ stuff which can go very low in frequency.

EDIT: BTW this is what I have:

    http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-sub-1200-12-120-watt-powered-subwoofer--300-629

It works well for me. I honestly can't complain. The room is small and allows this sub to go as low as 25 to 30 Hz. How low a sub will go un-distorted may also be a function of the size of the room. Note that I had to equalize the sub, because otherwise I get large peaks at different low frequencies including mid-bass. This is due to the room.

You are mentioning subs that are great for cinema. Lousy for 2 channel stereo. SVS and HSU take too much away from the speaker that you are enhancing. I cannot be a jockey for the brands I like. But I must say that audiophiles that spend $100k truly respect the attributes of the REL subwoofer over just about any sub that is under $20k. JL Audio is another company to watch. I personally have not listened to them. But JL Audio 10's and 13's are at the very top as well. If there is better below the $5k pricepoint, I'm not sure. Velodyne is junk to me. Waste. Like Marvey says "speaker level connection is best". REL rules the roost in that category.

    @ultrabike
When I build my Rock system with dynamic drivers, HSU is a perfect match for the sub. I have them as my fave. So don't get me wrong here. They to me are for a design that is not with planar speakers.

Most awesome output ever for a Rock system with dynamic speakers....

I've heard expensive (way over $20k subs) at small hotel rooms @ T.H.E. Show, which happens every June about 5 minutes away from where I live. They were mostly shit because they are too big for the room. Even equalized they have a hard time. I remember walking into a room and telling the sales rep that his sub actually did not sound like a complete pile of crap, out of the many in the show. He lower his gaze and told me something on the order of "well, we kind of equalized them".

I don't really distinguish between cinema and 2 channel stereo when it comes to performance. A sub performs well or it doesn't. I have a feeling that the high end Hsus will match or destroy a REL in 2 channel stereo applications when both are properly configured, placed and equalized. There is quite a bit of useful and un-distorted output out of those subs.

I've owned both Hsu and REL subs. I regret selling my REL about ten years ago. The Hsu subs are better for HT at any given price. REL subs cost too much for what they are, but they integrate so much better with the mains - better for music. I'm currently running a Hsu STF series (smaller) with my vinyl / SET / widebander system which I feel are better for music than the VTF series.

Do they move more air? Or perhaps better upper-bass response? I'm honestly not very familiar with REL.
