It would be a solid donut to provide a "tube", can't tell if they put felt over the front of it.

I already tried damping the back of the HD800 driver. Let's just say... I didn't like the results. Still too bright, and in some instances, it made things worse.

But damping the middle cavity/hole in the front makes sense as I have tried that a few times, and felt like it was okay just plugging that middle port. Bass did increase slightly even with back damping.

I still don't get why he's insisting that the HD800 needed to be bright to be clean/clear/transparent though. I'm hearing otherwise. The drivers have always been capable of resolution, no matter what its FR is. In fact, I heard a DIY closed-back headphone with HD800 drivers this past summer, which was the inspiration for me to take up the mods. It... actually had no highs at all, and the only peak was at around 1KHz, not very unlike e-stats.

Ok I see it. For reference this is what HD800 looks like. Note different looking circle in middle of driver. That might actually be a helmholtz resonate. The acoustic space between the enclosure and your ear being the air mass, and that tube thingy interfacing with the outside.

Yup. I'm scrounging around the house for my kids' playdough / clay right now to test it out.

Am I the only one who only knows the "Tari mod" as involving putting siracha all over the driver?

I started reading this thread expecting Sennheiser to start including a little packet of german hot sauce with their headphones.

Also, is making a helmholz resonator really something modding folks can do? That would be awesome!

I would think such a resonator would require some very exact measurements on its dimensions, and perhaps even type of material. That's something I wish we knew more.

No, it would require disecting the driver to add that "donut" as Marv said. Turns out I was wrong about them slapping a few cents of felt on the thing. They really did have to re-engineer that driver after all

    Yep. Already on it.

    Disassembly is a beetch!!!

But this can potentially lead to some modding services for older HD800 drivers...

Best approach is to machine it. Machine a plug that goes in it. The effect can be modeled, but trial and error might be faster. If I were Sennheiser, I would have never let anyone post those photos, at least not now.

Yes, especially if that's the only difference between the hd800 and hd800s acoustically. In the post, Axel mentioned the driver has been re-turned, but I'm not sure if that's just the work of the resonator or the resonator plus the actual diaphragm being re-engineered.

I thought I could do some 'shopping on these pictures to get a better idea of what's going on.

You see that little bit of mesh (looks like the same composition as the rest) that's covering that hole though. The process would likely be irreversible.

The front driver protector/grill also looks very slightly different in the centre, even if ignoring the resonator/absorber.

Please, normal folks, DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS AT HOME. You can easily completely destroy your drivers.

To be perfectly fair, Arnaud's simulations and JaZZ's original felt ring, and Marv's original version of what he ended up calling "Anax mod" are the main origins of the current mod a lot of us have played with. Anax didn't really do anything himself all alone :p
