I am a headcase and would worry too much about the lesser performance of SE vs BAL from the Gungnir Multibit. Otherwise in theory no issues with it. I love having a SYS around especially when auditioning changes to my chain/preamp.
Not exactly, but I ran a Pi2AES into an Emotiva XDA-1 to a SYS. I eventually replaced the SYS with a SAGA+ because I wanted a remote and tube goodness.
@Cryptowolf Do you find you actually get a decent amount of tube coloration with the Saga+? Funny enough the Akitika PR-102 is too neutral of a match for the Akitika GT-102, so I want to explore getting some sort of tubes in front of the GT-102 but still run passive to headamp. Seems Saga+ could be worth a try.
Get a Khozmo balanced passive preamp. Gorgeous and let’s you use the Gungnir’s balanced outputs it also has 2 pairs of balanced outputs so you can drive 2 Aigirs in dual mono. That being said I haven’t actually listened to mine yet because I can’t use speakers quite yet. But soon.
The Khozmo passives are incredible, highly recommend, good tip @rhythmdevils. I only owned an XLR switch from them, but it was killer build quality and 100% transparent. I figure when I really step up to a big boy tube amp I will go that route in the preamp department.
I was on a bit of a passive kick for a while, but now I’m pretty sure I couldn’t do without tubes in my preamp. Maybe a passive with a tube power amp like Innoculator suggests. Gotta have tubes somewhere in there.
Yeah that’s the one. Looks better in person though. Really tasteful engraving on the front panel and burned in “Khozmo” brand in the wood and aluminum remote. It’s timeless. It motivated me to clear off the stand it’s in of accumulated clutter. So now it’s alone and glorious.
That’s a sweet front plate. Doesn’t look anything like on the website, which looks much plainer.
@luckybaer you choose higher impedance version based on having a higher impedance source. For instance a tube DAC usually has a high output inmpdance, and needs a higher impedance pot in the preamp.
Yes of course. It’s a metal cover. Thick wooden side panels. Here’s a higher resolution picture so you can zoom in. I can’t get a side angle at the moment but happy to take one for you later tonight.
@rlow my phonostage's output impedence is 200 ohm (XLR) and Gungnir Multibit is 75 ohm... if I pick 200 ohm passive, does that negatively impact Gungnir Multibit's perf?
@Inoculator I think the SAGA+ added some warmth and sense of space to my system. I have a BK BT-140 solid state power amp from the 90’s. Moving from the SYS to the SAGA had an effect even my non-audiophile wife could hear.
