Half a dozen years ago, @Hands advised a mutual to try out a desktop SD card reader in order to avoid USB contamination. I don't know enough to be certain if that's a work around; but, prima facie, I should think so. I don't know if people are still doing that, or what devices they're using nowadays. So, I'd be interested if someone would weigh in, direct me to the right thread, or both.
The nice part in computer audio is you can buy lots of little gadgets which audiophools will tell you are essential, like for instance this audiophile switch, choose the best available clock and you are in for just over 4000 US $:
There is all that, but there is also basic, factual stuff, like how our operating systems are not real-time, but sound is. Gaps in the music don't sound good. It's not even audiophile, let alone audiophool: its like a bulb flickering.
True I got interrupts from time to time, increasing buffer did. not work, switched to real time kernel and the problem was gone. Funnily the cpu load increases due to irq but that is not a problem no more unwanted gaps
