Yeah, I think for the most part x country is cheaper, until you get into higher end stuff. I mean, my classic skiis I use I got for $10 at goodwill. My skate skiis on the otherhand, cost a bunch. And the combi boots, two sets of poles, waxing gear, wax, ect. Now I got backcountry skiis, got backcountry boots for the special backcountry bindings.
But its worth it. Something special about getting out into the forest, twisting around up and down trails in silence. Working to get up a hill, enjoying the ride down. I enjoy skate skiing the most, but there are no groomed ski places near my college. Plenty near my house to skate at, but none at college. Which is why I got backcountry skiis. With these, I don't need trails. I can go wherever.
