Was using Tidal so I had the idea of doing null test to check for weird stuff. Got the Qobuz version, lined up the samples and inverted, mix and render to new track and bam, there's the watermark.
Did the watermark exist on track 3 (exile, feat. Bon Iver) by chance? My wife and I recently listened to the CD through the Oppo, then streamed just that song on Tidal through the Oppo's built-in app and it sounded pretty bad vs. the CD. So annoying.
Thats the exact song I used to AB if I was imagining things or not. The warbling shows up prominently in the piano decay right at the beginning. I'll see if I can post the soundbyte
Sometimes I really hate Tidal. This kind of stuff is so annoying. It sends me down a rabbit hole of looking to optimize my streaming with various audiofool products, when in reality it's just jacked up source files.
Last week I saw a Tidal Masters version of an early 2000s pop-punk album I wanted to listen to. It was from a small label and there's no way it's authentic MQA. Such bull.
I searched for watermarking updates. Looks like it affects certain Qobuz albums too. Some sources stated that Universal UMG had been re-uploading tracks without watermarks recently. Obviously I still think it's a huge problem. Even saw talk about watermarks in an HDTracks download, but the user was provided with the clean files afterward... So ridiculous. Watermarking accomplishes nothing for the labels.
