If you will be buying something from a web store in the US, then try a shipping forwarding service like MyUS.com. If your friend wants to ship something, USPS will be the the most economical option.
Thanks for the tips! I actually bought something second hand and decided to find&pay for a suitable shipping method myself. I ended up getting an UPS Express Saver parcel via a local intermediate company. Their pricing was approx. 60% cheaper than buying the shipment directly from ups.com
If you have access to an intermediary, then yes, that's usually the cheapest way. Quality of service from intermediaries varies wildly though w/o much correlation to price. Otherwise, generally speaking, it's USPS.
@gixxerwimp no that's literally what I did. I used a shipping service called Shipit.fi that's based here in Finland. I was actually surprised I could buy a shipment from the USA via them.
