You have to use a transformer to convert the good XLR outs to SE. then I run that into an SE switcher and send it to all my amps, most of which are balanced.

The only way I can think to feed the balanced amps a balanced signal would be to add a second balanced switcher before the transformer but that’s putting too much in the chain for my comfort.

I simply used Freya S for that duty. Of course in active gain mode. I liked it in both sonics and convenience.

I made a switch box for the same reason. Can select between two xlr outputs or se with some transformers. Easy enough to diy.

Generally you can feed "single ended" signals into the balanced inputs of an amp and it won't know the difference. If you really want to keep it "proper" though, then you need: a) your transformer secondaries all floating and nothing tied together, b) your switch doesn't tie the grounds together either (meaning each position and channel is an independent 2-pole switch),

(cont) then you can connect anything to anything and it will be fine; it will remain "balanced" (but not shielded), and whenever your switch points to an amp with SE only it will automatically ground itself

This is definitely something that active preamps are useful for.

The switcher with a built in transformer is an awesome idea, and likely the most transparent option I imagine. Now I just need to find someone in the US who wants to wire one together. :)
