Using May on NOS. Outresolves Yggdrasil by a bit, has a blacker background with stage pushed back a bit. Tonal balance a bit more even-handed whereas Yggdrasil has a slight bass boost and more sparkle.
Yggdrasil’s “grayness” really apparent. Not that it bothers me, but there’s a more vinyl-like quality/grain to Yggdrasil, whereas May is more modern Hi-Fi. Personally liking the May with SJR more. Balances out the warmth of the tubes better, but it’s a preference thing. The pushed back stage also favors the Utopia’s upfront presentation.
@jexby Due to space constraints, the May is currently in my home theater/2 channel rack so I had to move the Utopia+SJR to test. I understand it’s not the best showcase for the May and I’m likely not getting best of the best performance out of it right now. However, I’m liking what I’m hearing right now.
Looking into a hardware-based upsampling solution like a second hand Chord Mscaler. Or find another way to reorganize the office space to accomodate the May.
