Take the "like" as a vote of sympathy. Mine now falls off as low as 1k and I can't hear the 4k beep of my favourite kitchen timer.

But its a loose/loose situation, because it seems to be that the less I can hear, the more bad sound is not just an annoyance, but sometimes actually hurts.

Throwing away the audio wish list is no bad thing, though there must be better reasons for doing so.

Yes, I am sticking with my midfi hereafter. Except... I do need better speakers, due to missing bass.

Thanks for the sobering perspective, Thad.. that's a real shame to hear about your condition. I suppose the best thing to do now is to keep things realistic. At the end of the day I guess we're in it for the music, not the gear, although, chasing that ever-diminishing upgrade cycle still has its thrills...

Believe it or not I still find plenty of pleasure in music, as long as it is not too loud or shrill. There are some tinkly bits completely missing, "air" is copletely missing, and timbre, eg of a violin string, is missing some harmonics. But it is still very much music!

So don't worry. You're going to go on enjoying music for a long time, if not for ever. Actually, all that fuss we make about high frequencies --- most of the music just isn't that high
