My favorite Kubrick and his best IMO. Funny, tragic, gripping, gorgeous. (I know you asked @ColtMrFire but I am a nerd for Lyndon and couldn’t help it!)

I did a back to back viewing of The Outfit and The Menu - somehow the double feature choice seemed to work pretty well. Enjoyed both films enough to recommend them. A couple of the more recent films that I've enjoyed. Glass Onion was silly and I loved all the Daniel Craig scene chewing along with Dave Bautista's over-the top character and with Janelle Monae's performances.

Watched Lolita (Kubrick) last night - loving Peter Sellers more and more.

@caute Barry Lyndon is brilliant like all Kubrick's movies. I don't have a whole lot to say about that one, it's been a while since I've last seen it.

Just got an email from HBO Max informing me they will be increasing their ad free streaming service by $1.

And what do you get in return for this increase? Nothing. In fact, you get LESS, since HBO Max is actually removing content. Yes, you heard that right... pay more, for less.

Get fucked in the ass with no lube and scream "please daddy more!" seems to be the new behavioral model corporations are expecting from it's consumers now.

Just watched Brandon Cronenberg's 2nd film, POSSESSOR, in preparation for seeing his 3rd film, INFINITY POOL, which opens in theaters today.

POSSESSOR is chilly cinema--it leaches the BTUs right out of you. I found myself back in the Cronenberg family business of body horror, albeit with a high-tech overlay of personality implants and body switching assassins. Still, there's too much of the camera gawking at this or that weapon tearing open this or that body part for reasons ranging from semi-coherent to completely opaque. Apparently the Cronenberg family's primal scene is the violation of bodies and spilling of large pools of blood for obscure reasons.

I'm being a bit unfair to father & son. This is Brandon's 3rd film. David directed many more than that, and his work deepened beyond straight body horror in later films like EASTERN PROMISES and A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, where the gore is wrapped in character (and characters are wrapped in gore). No doubt Brandon will have his own growth spurt.

But in this sophomore film of Brandon's, the plot, characters, and dialog are intriguing at first, then become less progressively less intriguing as the film goes on. Despite the body/identity switching, the science stuff eventually feels like mere plot decoration. By the end, I knew approximately who would die, and by whose hand, if not why. The ending made zero sense on any logical level. I'm still thinking it over, but further revelations are not likely.

It was resonant to see Jennifer Jason Leigh, whom Cronenberg Sr. used so intriguingly in eXistenZ, in her muted, mumbly role here. But after awhile the plot seemed reductive, more & more an excuse to stage even bigger blood pools. Too much of the dialogue was unintelligible. Overall, I give POSSESSOR a B minus.

But I'm as dystopian as the next guy, and the future of body horror is looking up. Next I'll see Brandon's INFINITY POOL, currently getting pretty big reviews. Apparently he went a lot deeper into plot & science complexity in the 3rd film. Plus it has the ultimate "ace in the hole" for horror, Mia Goth, who can be flat-out terrifying.

    The Lobster - (3.5/4)

An unusual blend of comedy, romance, dystopian sci-fi, and horror.

The comedy is in satire and absurdity of this dystopian world. The horror is not supernatural but in the consequences for people who cant find love. Not emotional consequence necessarily, but the literal enforcement and punishments handed to those who don't find a partner. The setting is surreal because the values core to this society are the foundation for how people behave - its alien. A place where honesty and sincerity is not ever meant to be broken ...

The logic in this story is not iron strength, but it's fun to consider and experience. I can't always tell when this movie is being satirical or just absurd. The 1st half is remarkable, the 2nd half drags a bit. (3.5/4)

The acting is excellent and responsible for some of the comedy and menace. There's just one strange choice in the film that kinda bothered or confused me which is the narration.:
Like I mentioned, the characters in the movie communicate and behave in a certain way. The narrator does this too, and its confusing in the earlier parts of the film before the narrator is introduced as another character. I imagined the narrator as a regular story teller, but later when you realize its through the lens of one of these characters living in this odd society only then does it make sense. But prior to that the narrator seemed like an awful casting choice or a lame humorous add-on that was removing some of the sparkle from the rest of the film.

edit: I've been with the same person most of my life so I don't much contemplate romantic loneliness. I wonder if this movie would have much more affect on a single person.

I've been interested in this film for years yet somehow never saw it. One of my personal rules being, "See anything with Olivia Colman in it," I do need to see this one.

The trailer is interesting. While the deadpan nihilism of this satire comes through clearly, I was somehow reminded of ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND; it looks at the conflicts & drama of love through the opposite end of the telescope.

PS: I've been with the same person for many years, yet there is still a dissident, discontented single guy inside my head.

I was reminded of Wes Anderson films where the characters often speak in monotone and matter of fact.

She shines in everything she is in.

Nice comparison. Charlie Kaufman stories are a whole 1-2 levels up, Adaptation one of my all-time favs.

No comment in case my wife reads this.

How are you all enjoying The Last of Us?

Having played both games several times, I'm loving it. But, it's hard for me to gauge how non-gamers are reacting to it as a TV show on its own merits.

As a non-Last-of-Us-gamer, I reacted to the trailer and the fact that it's based on a video game by not watching it.

 I'm a genre fan so watch sub-standard stuff too so can get behind your joy for Last-of-Us. Like, I watched the last Dune movie anyway despite low expectations. You asked! :D

I tend not to see films based on video games--just because as a non-gamer, I'll probably miss meta references & subtexts in these films.

But there are exceptions. I saw HITMAN, HITMAN 47, several of the RESIDENT EVIL franchise, SILENT HILL, others. Didn't even realize these films arose from games when I was seeing them...enjoyed them anyway.

If a movie's plot & characters appeal to me, I'll see it, game-based or not...

Saw this film on TV while still in H.S., found it unbearably creepy & haunting. Eventually read the book (and others by Nabokov) and concluded both Nabokov and Kubrick were geniuses. It wasn't the last time I was creeped out by a Kubrick film.

I've also been a James Mason fan forever; this film looms large in his body of work.

I'm a bit of a gamer, but I haven't owned a Playstation since PS2. It's been PC and some Xbox for me. So, even though I've never played The Last of Us, I'm really enjoying the show so far. IMO the show definitely stands on it's own merits.

I thought Nick Offerman's performance in the episode last night (E3) was just outstanding. And, of course, Murray Bartlett is great. They actually cast him for this role before White Lotus was a thing.

Comedic actors in dramatic roles are something I always look forward to and they nailed it.

You guys have me interested in THE LAST OF US. Just checked it on IMDB: it has the highest IMDB rating I've ever seen (9.3). I don't have HBO Max but wouldn't mind checking this one out.

FWIW, I only saw Pedro Pascal in one film I can recall (THE EQUALIZER 2). A supporting role as "the bad guy" isn't destined to show off any actor's best stuff, but something about him fascinated me. He gave unexpected depth this flawed character. Guess I'll start tracking down any of his stuff I have access to...
