Talking film with @Pharmaboy and thought about these two Mancini cuts. He was a lot more than that effin Pink Panther theme,

This scene (and music) gives me goosebumps every time.

That "Rhythmdevils" album is where I got my username from. Back in like 1995 or something, maybe earlier when I setup my first email address, I was trying to find an address that wouldn't have any numbers or anything at the end, but was just a word or short phrase and I went through my album collection looking for ones I liked- songs or album names or band names - and this wasn't taken. And then it's grown on me more over the years. Though I only use the email address for PayPal now.

It's a cool album, it's songs that were recorded by Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead for the soundtrack of Apocalypse Now during the parts where they're on the boat on the river descending into doom...

I remember you telling me about the inspiration for your name. Last night, I was tripping on how similar the posted George Crumb cut was similar to Napalm for Breakfast. BTW, that credit scene...

Concur; excellent soundtrack. Many are surprised when they hear the Grateful Dead connection similar to Toto's Dune and Queen's Flash Gordon OST works. I had this Play River Music album on vinyl before but unfortunately can not source it on digital for download.

Question: What's the earliest film soundtrack recording - ignoring the scores from the Silent Era?

One of my kids is under the impression that film soundtracks are a recent phenomenon.

The first commercially released film soundtrack was 'Songs From Walt Disney's Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs' in 1938. Prior to that was King Kong in 1933 with a full symphonic score and sound effects.

    ;) This!

I am a big electronic music fiend (soundtrack; modern classical; and ambient... as well as some early new age and minimalism). The first electronic soundtrack for a film was 1956's Forbidden Planet with, at the time, an alien all-electronic score that baffled many when it came out.

A few years before covid my local cinema ran a special screening of Forbidden Planet that opened with a documentary about the making of the film's soundtrack. It covered the people behind it, Bebe and Louis Barron, the equipment they built and used and how it was received. One thing I remember from it is that their score was excluded from consideration for an Oscar as it was not credited as music in the film's credits. Why wasn't it music? A lawyer from the American Federation of Musicians had the credits changed from 'music' to 'electronic tonalities'. Why the change? Neither of them were union members and the union did not want to be associated with their work, therefore their work could not be considered as music to avoid any implied association.

So very sad that Bebe and her husband were completely snubbed by the Academy (not even given a scoring credit) as they surely deserved at least a nomination if not the Oscar for best soundtrack that year... though it would have been a tough race against Alfred Newman's Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing which won that year.

For those have never heard the Forbidden Planet OST

My favorite movie! Groundbreaking in a lot of ways.

I keep thinking it's a theremin. According to Slate, special purpose equipment instead.
