I have fond memories of mercury, both at school (pushing little balls of it around the lab desks) and in mines (guys dumping their hands in big tanks of it to show you its supposed harmfulness was 'exaggerated'). I'm still alive, not sure how many of those mine guys are.

Picric is trinitrophenol, so they are very close buddies.

There are very few chemicals I won't let into my lab. Hydrofluoric acid is one, up there with dimethyl mercury. I've had cause in the past to need putrescine and cadaverine, but managed to avoid those....

Yeah, metallic mercury isn't so bad. It's the organic version dimethyl mercury that is awful. I always remember the story of Karen Wetterhahn, a mercury researcher who wore the wrong gloves. Splashed some dimethyl mercury, and it soaked through the gloves to kill her.

Whoa! Hadn't heard of her before.
High school chemistry teacher endearing himself to class, on blackboard:

"Among the compounds responsible for the disagreeable odour of feces are:

    Skatole
    Hydrogen Sulphide
    Indole
    Two diamines: putrescine & cadaverene

Alert students might notice some vertical alliteration."
