So this is HeadRoom's top-of-the-line DAC/amplifier, first introduced in 2006 and then improved with small changes over the next couple of years. This unit was manufactured in 2008 and includes all the tweaks and improvements.

It works perfectly and sounds great, but I mostly use the Senn HD800 now, and I prefer the sound of that headphone through my tube amps. So it's time for someone else to enjoy this thing.

Two analog inputs, three digital inputs (optical, coax, USB). Two headphone outputs (1/4" and 3.5mm) and one pair of switchable RCA outputs (worked great for years as my big speaker system's preamp). Three gain levels. Switchable crossfeed with two switchable highpass filters.

The contemporaneous Stereophile review is here: https://www.stereophile.com/headphones/406head/index.html

The Desktop is a modular design with various levels of available performance. The base amplifier, with a wall-wart switching power supply and no DAC, was priced at $600. To that, you could add these options:
    • Amp upgrade:
      • Home: +$200
      • Max: +$500
    • Optional DAC:
      • Standard: +$250
      • Home: +$300
      • Max: +$400
    • Volume control upgrade:
      • Stepped attenuator: +$200
    • Power-supply upgrade:
      • Desktop Power Supply: +$400
This one has the best of everything: The Max amp, Max DAC, stepped attenuator, and external supply, for a total price when new of $2100.

$845. Free shipping within the continental US.
