Yes, in order to get the best sound out of it, it needs to be left on 24/7.

Anyone tried running dsd out of a SACD player into the Cyan 2?

It was recommended by the distributor whom I bought it from to keep it on 24/7. And I have been doing just that until in recent weeks, i bought a new preamp and had to be turning the cyan 2 on and off pretty often, to incorporate the subs and connecting other components to the preamp…

it really doesn’t make that much of a difference vs 24/7 on…

having said that I still keep it 24/7 now that I am done with the preamp setup

My only concern is longevity. Will the DAC "ware out" faster if I leave it on vice only turn it on when I want to use it.

So, I returned the Yggdrasil and have a Cyan2 on order. It sounds like they take a bit of time to make/ship them. So, for now, I will be using my Bifrost 2 with NOS.

That’s a good old argument whether turning it on/off will yield longer life span vs leaving it consistently on.

Only god knows the answer to this one

I know I will be selling mine in a few months so I won’t be able to witness that

Got myself one of these to try and it is really an excellent DAC for the price!

I tried I2S out of my excellent Rockna WDNET server… but ultimately preferred the sound of USB off the same streamer! Go figure…

I didn’t get to do any critical comparison with the Gungnir 2, as they are both in my work setup, but I feel like the Cyan 2 can hang out with the G2 and not be embarrassed, which I wasn’t expecting given how good the G2 is!

Haven’t played with upsampling yet, as I really don’t have much free time for this kind of stuff nowadays.

While it still has some thickness and darkness to it, it is nowhere near as thick and ‘dark chocolatey’ as the spring 1 was!

@Clemmaster Give it some time to warm up. In my experience, it takes longer than a Yggdrasil to stabilize.

Had my Holo Cyan 2 since mid-February

Its by far and away the best-sounding DAC I have had and all my music lover friends agree

One "drawback" if I can describe it as that, is that there is no input selection and if a USB cable is inserted, nothing else is available

A work-around to this is to disable the 5V volt line from the USB-A plug. A simple way is to attach a thin tape over pin 4 (viewed from the front). Pins D+. D- and ground are still connected, so the audio signal is present

Removing the 5V line makes the Cyan see the USB input as a co-ax device. Then, using the output selector on the output device (in my case a Lumin U2) you can quickly compare USB and co-ax. Since the Lumin cancels the output not selected

Experimenting with different cables made me realise that a Furutech GT2-pro B provided the best results

I tried inakustik, Audioquest Diamond, Audioquest Carbon and the cable that came with the Cyan. All very small differences. The Furutech gave slightly less bass and softer volume but much better mid and treble quality

As far as co-ax is concerned, a vdHul Digicoupler worked best for me

So, for a stupid reason I’ve been listening to my Cyan 2 playing un-upsampled redbook all evening. And it’s fabulous. Very different than the dsd256/512 I’ve been playing through it for the last 2 weeks that I’ve had it. Richer, more timbral, not as ethereal - can’t say if it’s that the midrange texture is much better or that the high extension just isn’t as artificial. Anyways me like it. Glad to know it can be a friend of non-HQPlayer streams too.

Oh yeah, the stupid reason? Have been experimenting with using a RooControl to turn the power on and off on my amps (auto-shut-down a must for me, 30 minutes of no playing music, turn those Aegir’s and that Freya+ n the F off ftw). Diggin’ it.

I leave the Cyan 2 on but the Lumin turns off after 30 mins

I've had my Cyan 2 for about three weeks now, listened a lot especially during the past week. I think it's time for some impressions.

My chain is Roon -> HQPlayer -> Holo Red -> Holo Cyan 2 -> Meier Jazz FF -> HEDDphone Two. I mostly listened at DSD512 (22/24 MHz), modulator ASDM7EC-super, filter sinc-Lh. PCM tests with the LNS15 noise shaper, and mostly sinc-Lh, too.

    General impressions

First things first: I love it! :) I'm a detail whore, and the Cyan 2 delivers that in spades. Some external upsampling is required, of course: Someone, I think it was @crenca, said the Cyan 2 is only half a DAC, and that describes it well: No internal upsampling is done at all, this is a NOS-only DAC. I tried it without upsampling, too, of course, and it wasn't half as bad as I had expected. Much worse sound can be found out there. But the detail I crave is missing, so that's not my cup of tea.

Regarding the sound in general, it's neutral to my ears. No specific part of FR spectrum stands out. But that doesn't mean it's boring at all. Compared to other DACs I had, I noticed something I'd call authority: There's power behind each note, not the slightest feeling of limpness. Where a big sound is called for, the Cyan 2 delivers it without hesitation. Still, quiet parts are one of its strengths, too: Due to the wonderful blackground, even very small notes stand out and are easily identifiable.

One important point to me is treble as I'm sensitive there. Although the Cyan 2 doesn't have the darker quality of the iFi Neo iDSD, I never had a problem there. Which probably is partly a feature of HQPlayer's, I think that treble fuckery is often a filter problem.

I especially like the 3D stage and instrument separation: Each instrument has its clearly identifiable place and is perfectly distinguishable from all the others (provided the material is good enough). When listening to well-known music for the first time with the Cyan, I often noticed background parts that of course had always been there, but never jumped to my ears the way they did with the Cyan—as if every part of the score was given the attention it deserves. Not because the volume of background parts became louder, but because they were so well separated from the rest. Without sounding unnatural, I should add: Clear insight, not strangely separated sounds.

Another personal favourite of the Cyan's features is the detail I already mentioned, especially microdetail: I never heard as much minuscule differentiation in, for example, the sound of a tom tom or the vibrations of a double bass. I noticed that while normal recordings didn't change that much, very good recordings became breathtaking.

Especially during the first part of the honeymoon phase (it's not over yet, I guess), I had the feeling that many details I heard just sounded incredibly satisfying. Can you guess I am happy with the device? :)

    HQPlayer

With the iFi Neo iDSD, I had liked to use ASDM7EC-super 512fs+ with sinc-Lh because it added a tiny bit of extra treble compared to ASDM7EC-super, which helped with detail and space there. At least for some music (pop/rock/electronic), I preferred sinc-MGa over sinc-Lh for the better blackground and some extra slam. Both are not required with the Cyan 2, ASDM7EC-super/sinc-Lh is my favourite combination for the Cyan 2 for all music.

I sometimes like the ASDM5ECv3 modulator, too. To my ears, it provides snappier transients and can sound really good with music like Polyphia, e.g., but it also loses some microdetail compared to 7EC-super. Alternatively, I sometimes use minringFIR-lp as the filter to achieve a similar though somewhat different result.

The DAC correction provided by HQPlayer for the Cyan 2 is unfortunately too much even for my upgraded system at DSD512—I'd need more power in the CPU to make that work, which means buying a new motherboard, too. This is an i7-7700, so quite an old CPU, but I have an extremely powerful GPU with the NVIDIA Tesla P100. Unfortunately, not everything can be outsourced to the GPU.

As it is, short pauses occur every few seconds to minutes, depending on HQPlayer settings and the sample rate of the music. The correction opens up the sound up top a bit, which leads to even more effortlessness and generally a more natural sound. The difference is small to my ears, though. After listening for a few hours, i.e. when listening fatigue has set in, I'm struggling to hear a difference at all. It's clearly audible with fresh ears, but to me it's not a night and day difference. It's a good excuse to buy a new computer eventually, but I don't have to rush it.

    PCM vs DSD

PCM is much better than I thought. Most people seem to agree that PCM isn't really worth it, but that's not true to me. In PCM mode, it's still one of the best DACs I ever heard, maybe roughly on par with the iFi Neo iDSD in DSD mode.

One interesting detail: To my ears, PCM at 705/768kHz sounds a lot better than at 1411/1536kHz. It especially provides better resolution, the highest possible rate sounds a little smeared to me, which made me prefer the minringFIR-lp filter over sinc-Lh. At 705/768kHz, my preference went back to sinc-Lh, and the distance to DSD shrank quite a bit.

I still prefer DSD for its better detail resolution and effortlessness, which also means better separation and placement. However, in PCM mode, the DAC opens up a bit at the top regions, which also increases the stage a bit. I can see how others might prefer that kind of sound. Also, PCM upsampling requires a lot less computing resources, which allows using a much smaller (possibly fanless) computer for HQPlayer.

    USB vs I2S

That's hard to compare as getting the Cyan 2 and HQPlayer in the right mode takes some time. I2S might be a tiny bit better, but I'm not sure if there's a difference at all.

Cyan 2 vs iFi Neo iDSD

The iFi Neo iDSD is the DAC I used before the Cyan 2. While I was positively overwhelmed by the Cyan's qualities when I first heard it, direct comparisons today revealed a much smaller gap than I had expected. I used the iDSD with DSD512, too, also with sinc-Lh and ASDM7EC-super.

The iFi is a bit darker, is missing some stuff at the top end and adds a little bit of rumble at the low end. This makes the sound a bit boxy to my ears, especially sounds like a snare or a hi-hat can have a bit of a dull quality. The Holo sounds more natural to me. OTOH, the iFi's extra rumble can be tasty at times.

Resolution-wise, the iFi may sound like nearly on par at first glance—that's how good it actually is! However, when listening more closely, the Cyan 2 provides quite a bit more microdetail, better timbre, more realistic instrument sound in general. Also, the Cyan 2 easily trumps the iDSD in terms of instrument separation.

But still, to be frank, I didn't expect the two to be this close. The iFi without HQPlayer is another matter, but I need HQPlayer for the Cyan, too, so it makes sense to also allow the iFi the HQPlayer advantage. Given that, the iFi reaches maybe 95% of what the Cyan can do. Depending on what your other equipment is able to do, they might even be on par. Using my HD650, I couldn't hear any differences in terms of resolution between the two, only the HEDDphone Two made the distinction possible. (I should add, though, that I've been wondering for a while if my amp might be a particularly bad match for the HD650—that could be a reason, too.)

I should also add that I was using the Red as USB source for the iFi, too. Given the difference that the switch from the Zen Stream to the Red made to my ears when I bought the Red, it might be that on a noisier source, the iFi might fare worse.

So is the Cyan 2 worth the extra money? I bought my iDSD as B stock when the iDSD 2 was already out—for € 460,–. That € 900,– gap isn't really justified in my eyes, but, of course, my iDSD was a steal. Compared to the € 900,– for a new iFi Neo iDSD 2, Cyan 2's € 1366,– are ok IMHO, especially if you are looking for very small details in the music or for a more neutral presentation. But it might be well worth it to try the iFi Neo iDSD (2), too.

    Conclusion

A great DAC for comparatively few bucks. Personally, I have never heard more expensive DACs, so I have to rely on the word of others who say that it provides very good value. To me, it's simply the best DAC I ever heard.

    Great review!! Thanks

When I had the Cyan 2 10 months ago, I personally found the pcm much inferior compared to dsd. If anything, it was the dac correction that significantly improves the pcm performance to much closer than the dsd

To my ears, the DAC correction doesn’t do as much good with PCM as it does with DSD. More of a different flavour than a real improvement, using the 700k rates improved the sound much more to my ears than the DAC correction did. At least it works with my system. :)

In the end, it’s a matter of taste, I guess.
