In 2014, the worldwide Muslim population was over 2 billion. How many of them are actively attacking anyone specifically?

I certainly do think that many Islamic countries have serious human rights issues that need to be addressed, but so does China and they're not a Muslim nation, so do many countries in Africa that aren't predominantly Muslim as well.

99.9999% of them are not. But the concern is what should we do if these kinds of attacks become more frequent? New York, London, Boston, Paris, Miami. There will be more. When will it happen in LA? I don't think we can wish the issues away or hope for the best. We need solutions and our politicians are too afraid to speak because of political correctness.

Immigration and surveillance policy. There should be debate on this, very ugly debate.

Yeah my mistake, I replied in the wrong thread.

Rescinding the rule is a mistake. Add each other on facebook, make a group text chat, go to an actual politics forum, whatever. But a big part of the fresh start with this site was making it more welcoming, making it easier for new members to jump in and feel comfortable. The political discussions at Changstar were something that hindered the community in the past. Not even due to the slant many veteran posters have, but because it just isn't related to the hobby and touches on many of the most sensitive, frustrating etc. topics possible. Frankly, I don't want to know everyone's political leanings and feelings on Muslims. I want to talk about audio. Inevitably these discussions, rightly or wrongly, color everyone's perception of a poster's other posts. We can say some stuff about being mature and separating this from that but I don't think that is realistic.

Point taken. I will consider going back to the rule. I get crap from both sides. People want it to be more like colorful like Changstar. People want it to be more friendly like HF. Let's say this is an experiment and not permanent. I work in mysterious ways. Sometimes giving people what they want better illustrates the effects. It leaves me with an example to show people so I never again have to deal with people bitching and giving me a headache about how this site isn't as fun as Changstar.

Plenty of experts maintain that profiling isn't useful (surveillance). https://www.schneier.com/essays/archives/2012/05/to_profile_or_not_to.html

The issue being that, very few people, let alone Muslims/Arabs/brown people are terrorists, and enough terrorists don't fit that profile, that it's wasted resources and creates a dangerous environment for the targeted groups without making us appreciably safer.

Related to that is privacy. The recent case in Bakersfield with the iPhone was good example. There are no laws governing this in the USA.

Profiling works if done effectively. They do it in Israel. It's not racial profiling, but behavioral profiling. No more $11.99 / per hour TSA employees, instead fewer but better trained employees. Seriously, the TSA needs to stop asking my wife to step aside to check her bags for the sake of "randomness" or political correctness.

Done properly, sure. By and large we're not set up with a system for doing it properly.

I know. That's what's really disappointing. We could be set up for it (when there is a will, there is always a way) but it's probably too late. Institutions like the TSA become their own bureaucratic machines. It's essentially a post 9-11 jobs program for people you wouldn't want to hire for your own company. I keep all my valuables in my carry on bag, especially at LAX.

Sorry. I am just f'ing pissed off and saddened at the same time because it's hit so close to home... again. Just maddening. When will this stop? Those could have been my kids, had they been older, in that club.

I prefer SBAF over Changstar. Fun is relative, it is what you make of fun.

P.S. If you cannot take a joke find yourself a desert and stay there. Voluntary isolation has been a religious practice for ages.

@Marvey I definitely understand. Remember France was hitten very hard during last times and this matter is important for me as well. As a frenchman and as a father.

but @Azteca spoke the truth neverheless. that's subjects I love to disguss IRL with friends when communication is more easy. Never on Internet except on private forums with some old friends and even there, with well known people, it's not that easy.

Trust me, I'm Latino and a guy with my name was killed. My queer Latinx friends are deeply shaken. I still don't see it as a reason to turn this into a political discussion forum. Spend time with loved ones and friends, get active in your local physical community, call that friend you haven't caught up with in a while. Facebook and in-person have been where I've dealt with this tragedy.

I'm inclined to agree, we don't need too much politics. Maybe once every so often, just to up the drama level.

I'm immune right now, riding the wave of my Modi U 4490 :p

I agree w. Azteca. Although, thank you, @AustinValentine for that excellent and well informed synopsis.

As for immigration reform, there has been a steady influx of undocumented randos in recent months. Can HF pay for a wall? :p

Agreed. No more politics. Experiment over. Let this be the example to point to; and I don't ever want to any more bitching from any of you guys about how this place isn't as fun as Changstar.

This does not mean that I won't explain the peculiarities of the USA political systems and things like Democratic Party primary superdelegates to friends with better functioning parliamentary systems in more homogeneous Nordic societies.
