I was checking the EML page on tubesusa and found this: http://www.emissionlabs.com/datasheets/EML45B.htm
    [IMG]

It's supposedly coming out in April this year for $604 a pair. I'm interested in this as a more practical 45 tube, since it can put out about 4.4W on the output. I've never heard the usual EML 45s myself so I can't speak for the sound quality baseline.

My amp is able to run these with minor tweaks, and I might jump at trying them later down the line. Anyone else up for this?

I know @No_One411 has run into some difficulties with EML before, which I've heard about but you guys surely have not.

I've only used their rectifiers so far, but I've had zero issues personally.

Btw, I have some of the EML 45 Lampizator tubes. Basically they are "globed" shaped and mesh.

Cool. They increased the size of the plate and now they have a 2A3.

Looks cool, I hadn't heard of those before. How do they sound, have you compared them to any other 45s?

It must use 1.5A instead of 2.5A for the filament current. Not that I'd complain if there were more 2a3s on the market if @Marvey is correct and it's a renamed 2a3 with a 2.5A heater. The real issue with this new tube is making sure it would work with existing transformers, custom gets expensive fast.

    Not really.

It's just another freakshow circus act tube. I hate this kind of shit. You won't get any more power if you stick it in any existing 45 amp. To get more power, you need to run higher voltages and bias: you have to build a design around it, and once you do, you can't run normal 45s. Plate impedance is omitted in the datasheet, but looking at the examples, it looks to be the same as the 45, which might be a no go for transformers in a 2A3 amp which might expect half that.

Seriously EML should just call this the 9912 tube or whatever. The 45B is a marketing gimmick, like how KR does 300BXL, 300BXXXL

Well, I guess we can all ignore this tube now. No power benefits in 45 designs, not usable in 2a3 designs. Shit, these things are more expensive than NOS 45s, so there's not even a compelling reason to get them for your 45 amp.

What happens is that audiophiles will buy these tubes and stick them into their 45 amps thinking they will get more power. Seriously, this kind of stuff happens. People don't read the fine print and many audiophiles love to "hope". At least EML is much more forthright about their 45B needing a new circuit compared to KR Audio with their 300BXLS.

Wow, that's really scummy. I'll be skipping over them if I want new production 2a3s.

@Marvey I thought it was pretty well explained in the page that you would need to significantly increase the B+ to get the extra power from this tube. I had half a mind to try it with my own amp, except for that I would be dependent on the supply of these tubes henceforth because of that. I'm just curious to see if I can get the 45 tube sound with some headroom for a speaker rig if need be. The KR stuff was definitely much more obnoxious with the operating points, compounded by the unreliable supply.

Basically a newer version of the EML mesh globes they made a while back.

    http://www.lampizator.eu/Fikus/DHT_TUBES.html

Since I am using them in my lampi dac which can take a variety of tube types, I have tested them against very few other 45s. Only compared them against NU and RCA 45 ST. Liked the EMLs more. Similar midrange magic as rca/nu but much more extended and linear. NOS tubes had the edge on the midrange magic though. Can't tell if I felt that way because nos tubes were more lacking elsewhere or they were just better in midrange. Key thing on all the 45s seemed to be nailing the tone/timbre of instruments.

Oh. Anyone in Bay Area with a 45 amp? Would love to hear these tubes on a 45 amp.

    I don't.

I'd rather hear old-stock tubes, especially the globes. The old-stock stuff is way cheaper too. I had the EML 45 meshes a while back. They were good-to-meh. Maybe because they weren't the speshal Lampi version.

Wish I had chance to compare the old stock globes vs these eml 45 globes. Surprised you didn't like EMLs. Thought they had instrument tone right in the way 45 can and were more linear across the spectrum. Haven't tried regular eml 45, but maybe the globes make some difference. As for the lampi label, its obvious that it takes the eml 45 to amazing heights given the special polish iron they send to eml to make the mesh plates out of.

The distributor would not guarantee the globe EML against DOA. The globe shape doesnt help keep the plates in position during shipping. Given iffy nature of EML (seems luck of the draw), I didn't want to risk several hundred dollars.

The new production tube business is super shady, at least for desirable tubes, if you've ever seen distributor invoices.
