nothing here is about special privileges. yet all of the above is fine if you are hell bent on self centered principles.
Most humans can get along with plenty of people without having to alter personal principals.
continue being a special snowflake on our planet.

Er. How about not give a f**k about what people say online and move on in real life. Too much awesome tunes need our attention.

It seems that there is a dichotomy in how people act based on a dehumanization of the "other" when interaction takes place digitally. That this site is called Super Best Audio Friends implies that this forum will in some way transcend the interaction found elsewhere online by involving an actual community. Crying from the rooftops that no one can force you to be kind proves nothing other than your determination to be foul.

There are actual people on the other side of those avatars...

Originally, on Changstar, when they decided on this name, it seemed to me that it was almost ironic. If I remember correctly, there was a conscious effort to shed the contentious reputation that CS had, and calling it super best audio friends was tongue in cheek overcompensating.

All of that aside, I calls 'em like I sees em. Nothing is sacred; no one has a right to protection from offensive speech.

Some people "just want to talk about audio". If that involves making jokes at the expense of people who actually have to deal with relevant issues in real life, tough shit. We should just move on from such tiffs because we are, after all, just talking about audio. SNR and all that. Not like head-fi, reddit, 4-chan, etc. The jokes add to the content of the site and create a sense of irreverent camaraderie.

I'd just like to point out that THIS NEVER HAPPENED.

The autism pic wasn't directed at @Ice-man. Ice-man made his situation known after that pic. No one has made fun of him since that. I only objected to the idea of people censoring what they say out of fear of offending him.

Gender and cultural jokes abound here. Poking fun at disabilities, while distasteful, may part of the weltanschauung of the site. If we want to create a safe place for everyone, then part of the Introduce Yourself thread should include a list of all triggers for each new member. OR, we can all realize that we live in a free society where one person's right to be insulting is worth fighting for, and bad taste needs more protection than good taste.

I could say that I "understand" what people who have mentally disabled relatives have to go through, but that would just be an incredibly disingenuous statement. I don't know what these people go through. And maybe if I did, I wouldn't be so quick to use the term autist, sperg, retard, etc. I totally accept that possibility.

I actually have a totally different viewpoint on the mentally disabled and how society handles that situation, but let's not go down that road.

Ultimately there's no reasonable way to read offense into my original meme knowing the context around which it was posted.

Well, in a way it did. Hopefully I'm not putting words in his mouth, but I bet Ice-Man would prefer to browse this site without being reminded about such real-life issues, especially in a way that makes light of them. That's all.

Why should we be "afraid" of offending Ice-Man? What the f**k is he going to do if you DO offend him?

Don't be dense. When I go to work, I never hear offensive shit. That's not because every employee is required to submit a list of every SJW-certified "trigger" with their job app. It's because everyone stays focused on the job and does not f**k AROUND.

The problem you're getting at is that SBAF isn't a closed group of friends who know each other well. But you, and apparently many other core members, would like to act like it is. That's fine; but expect people like Ice-Man to force a reality check from time to time.

I claim no such right and need no "safe space". By the way, I am not personally perturbed by this conversation as it provides an interesting opportunity to discuss topics otherwise neglected. What I think perpetuates this thread is your talk of "having the right" to say what you will. I do not believe that rights are at all involved in this context. If you were banned from this site right now, you would still have the right to start a blog where you do nothing but make handicap jokes. Unless Marve happens to work for the government and we hear that cizx "disappeared", I think you are well within your constitutional allowances.

I get that it's a bit rough around here, but why stoke the fire in this case? Did you ever stop to think that in a context like this where everyone is pretty callous, his reaction might mean something hard is actually taking place in his life right now? Not saying to never cut a joke, but try to think on a bit more human level...

EDIT: By the way, actually having a dialog like has gone on here is a STRONG argument against the concept of "safe spaces". In the real world, we must be able to interact with others in an articulate way that allows for society to exist.

Having the capacity to intake insults and shit them out leaving no trace in yourself is part of being an adult. No matter online or IRL.

This thread is pure noise. If possible please lock it up.

Easy to say from behind a keyboard.

Not insulting people is also part of being an adult. IRL, you can expect to get punched in the face if you go far enough.

And I totally get this. But keep in mind Friends can make all sorts of crude jokes, physical humor, hazing, and general asshatery. At least that's what my friends did growing up. But I'm a WHITE MALE so I'm not sure how I fit into our Brave New World of politically correct cuckholds who are ever so concerned with ensuring that feelings are not hurt at all costs. A 90's kid who's already a dinosaur

And again, I'm not insensitive to the opposing position. Growing up I had a friend whose mom died when he was really young. We never made yo momma jokes because it made us uncomfortable. It bothered us more than him, because he was exposed to a world where people didn't wear their trigger warnings on their sleeves. You get past these sorts of things and toughen up.

More seriously, I'm not sure what to do in this situation. I can sympathize with @Ice-man because I know other parents with autistic kinds, in some cases extremely autistic kids where the parents know they will be their kids' caretakers for life. On the other hand, I don't feel totally comfortable restricting the use of certain words. Full retard, warmfag, Chi-Fi, ghey are already commonly used. If we strike autistic, then we have to strike the rest. I guess OJ could have posted a picture of Dustin Hoffman as Rain Man, but even that could have been taken as offense.

I like the fact that we don't have to take ourselves seriously and be free to speak off the cuff; but I also believe that there is a line that should be not crossed because of basic human decency. I mean, I've crapped on certain posts here far worse without the use of any taboo words.

I'll leave you guys to figure it out. I don't think there's a solution here.

white male on the outside, arab jihadist on the inside. like me -- i'm a spic inside but on the outside i am a white.

sorry i love jokes. there might not be a consensus hidden in here, but it is kinda philosophically interesting. that aside, surely there's a way to not censor words or phrases, even potentially offensive ones. perhaps we can just defer to basic human decency, which involves saying dumb things that might at some point offend somebody. at that point, that someone can indicate that something affected them, thus providing the other person a chance to clarify and say something like - "man, wasn't directed at you at all, and that sucks sorry to hear it. ps i love you."

k gonna load up another siiiqqqq track carry on.
