This new toy was recently announced

    http://en-de.sennheiser.com/audio-amplifier-gsx-1000

They say it's made for gaming but I wonder if it will process 7.1 channels for movies as well. It has a built in amp but also has a line-out so you can probably plug it into your own amp. However I don't know if the binaural processing is only on the headphone output and the lineout is just a standard stereo output.

Why does it seems like most of "professional gaming" equipment in the market look like a toy with impractical shape and neon color scheme?
Manufacturers must have think that those professional gamers are humans stuck at teenager's desperation for recognition and self-identity and thus, every single gears they have must be brightly LED'ed with colors of rainbow or something.

Rants aside, the said Binaural rendering is indeed interesting. Just like what @Cspirou wrote, it will be cool to have binaural immersion while watching movies or playing story-rich games with good VO.

Only PC & MAC? Not on any gaming systems?

I am pretty sure it works on gaming systems. I have a friend with a Schiit Modi + Magni Uber stack that he uses with his PS4. This should work in a similar way.

They're obviously targeting the Astro Mixamp crowd with this design.

There is also a GSX 1200. Basically the same thing but with an added ability to connect to other modules in order to communicate directly instead of through the computer. I'm sure it comes in handy during Overwatch team sessions.
