The Hd700 has two major flaws in its FR, a large dip at 3k and a ridiculously high spike around 6k. My guess is that the amplifiers you do not enjoy with the Hd700 are somehow making one of those things worse. If the amp distorts even a little bit that 6k spike would make you cry out in agony.,so that would be my choice for most likely explanation.

The HD820 and hemp do not have a spike at 6k like that.

I actually think the HD700 was a very solid headphone WITH EQ but I found it horrible without it. Getting rid of the 6k death spike and eqing up the 3k region a bit made it quite impressive. Very comfortable and nice soundstage, great for gaming.

I also really enjoyed it with symphonic/power metal. I think it is still the best headphone I ever heard with Luca Turilli's Lord of the Winter Snow album. Sounded incredibly epic. Again WITH EQ!

You know I think you are on to something there . While HD700 sounded bad w/ Liquid Platinum on the sampling of what was listening to before, it DOES sound really good with metal. :headbang:

Listening to JUST ONE FIX right now and wow, its nice. Dragonforce sounded good too, except heard some occasional high spl eguitar distortion spikes that sounded really out of place, maybe hitting the magic 6k freq (or just mastering not sure). Real nice with early Metallica, too.

most other stuff just sounds like lo-fi version of HD8xx tho - like HD700 trying to achive the same sound signature as HD8xx but has blunted ultimate resolution and lesser soundstage despite still having icy treble w/ some amps... I still ain't gonna crap on this headphone because it survived abuse of a move, I got it for $420 (i think its def worth that much), and its the most comfortable headphone I've ever worn. Plus its different enough from HD820 to be interesting... But it seems to not be standing the test of time with multiple equipment combos over the years. Very limited band of equipment synergizes well with this headphone without EQ.
