Not sure how much I like punk (? or at least the origins of punk), or metal type music. But I could try some things, haven't really listened to much of that.
Lets see, I like: Styx, Chicago, Pink Floyd, Marillion, Jethro Tull, Billy Joel, The Who, ELO (more the older ELO), The Doors, King Crimson, ELP (when I'm in the mood for over the top pretentious progness), Mannheim Steamroller (when I'm in the mood for that kind of thing).
The only way to get Steve Wilson Yes albums in physical format are Blu-Ray/CD combo packs. The Barry Diament Yes CDs are the next best but he was sometimes given problematic tapes to work with. (The only 1st NY Dolls CD that sounds good is an 80s one from Japan with the 1st album and the 2nd album minus 2 songs.) Sometimes it gets kind of complicated. :(
Steve Wilson mixed Prog sounds great in general. Avoid Jethro Tull - Aqualung on CD. Peter Mew mastered it and jacked up the highs and added NR. Thick as a Brick was messed up in it's initial run and they corrected it in a second run. (The downloads don't have these problems.)
If you like prog and Marillion then you must listen to '70s Genesis, specifically Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and A Trick of the Tail
For Genesis you need to find the old '80s CDs. The new ones are remixed and sound awful. The 1994 remasters are decent but a little no-noised in places.
If you really like Chicago II and have the Rhino, the Steven Wilson Remix is so much better it is worth replacing. Edit: added correct url - http://tinyurl.com/yals5omh
Lol I was wondering why I had 30+ alerts. I'll recommend some of my favs in a couple genres. I'm a big Styx and Pink Floyd fan, so maybe some of this stuff with stick out to you. Metal - Consign to Oblivion by Epica, The Fourth Legacy by Kamelot. Moonspell is great as they have a long discography of wildly varying genres of metal, but pretty gloomy.
Phantasma is a collaboration of sorts in the form of an awesome rock/metal opera. Moving on from metal, if your in the mood to contemplate your existence, check out Blinkers Removed by Man of No Ego. If you want some 80s/90s retrowave nostalgia check out FM-84.
@DigMe recommendation of digging into Pink Floyds earlier stuff like Meddle I'll second, I think Meddle is one of my favorite of theirs.
All this stuff is on tidal, amazon(cds) or sometimes bandcamp.
Yes - Close to the Edge
Genesis - Wind & Wuthering
Joni Mitchell - Hejira
The Pentangle - self-titled
Steely Dan - Katy Lied, Aja
Gong - Angel's Egg
Brian Eno - Another Green World
Can - Ege Bamyasi
Michael Rother - Flammende Herzen
Allan Holdsworth - Metal Fatigue
John Fahey - God, Time & Causality
Bill Evans - Explorations
Jan Johansson - Jazz på svenska
Herbie Hancock - Sextant
Kate Bush - Never For Ever
Thanks for all the suggestions everybody, Ill check those out. @Merrick where do you suggest I find the Genesis albums? On amazon all I see is the remaster, or what looks like the original, but for $40.
Unless you're buying whatever the brand new release is for an album, I always use Discogs. The sellers there are good at listing what issue they have and you can set up wish lists and track them for the prices to come into the range you want.
