Thanks, Purrin. So you think my Kenwoods probably hold up to these pretty well as a closed dynamic? I know they wouldn't be an upgrade from my HD650s.

I'm intrigued by these. I spent some time with the Fostex TH500RP and fell in love with the fit and finish. Not so much with the sound. I've got the PM-3s now as my closed-back work headphone. The isolation is unbeatable, and I enjoy the sound plenty. Wondering how you would rate the X00 in comparison? Worthy replacement for the Oppos?

TH500RP just needs some love and massaging to sound good (aka mods). ;)

I have a review unit of the Fostex TH-X00 on my ears right now coming from an Audio-GD Master-11.

It's worlds more pleasant to listen to than the TH600 for me. The treble is so much smoother and tamed down, even before any burn-in (and the Fostex cans are said to benefit from burn-in).

Bass depth is outstanding. Impact is reduced compared to the TH600, but I'm more concerned with bass potential than stock signature anyway. It's still emphasized over neutral, but would only be offensive if you're afraid of good bass. It's not intrusive at all on mids.

    Wow.

Okay, time to check its basshead potential. High shelf of -15dB at 150Hz. Volume up... BAM! My skull is rattling to Wiz Khalifa's "On My Level."

    Basshead approved. BIG TIME.

This is the first worthy entry into the basshead can field for a long time.

    F.

Buy the hell out of these!

Haha. I imagine they would be awesome out of the AGD M11. If you can, try them from something inferior, or especially soft or flat sounding. I want to confirm that they aren't that impressive from crappy gear (which I want to emphasize has little to do with cost).

These are quite similar to the JVC HP-DX1000. The JVC has a little less treble and more bass in the stock signature and does a more pleasing job with the reproduction of stringed and wooden instruments. I need to burn in the Fostex TH-X00 though. After burn-in, I'll do a head-to-head comparison.

How's the isolation relative to the TH-600? Any better?

Perhaps slightly more. They still don't seem fully closed, though.

I can see that. The mids and highs sounded great to me. Just needed some more kick in the low end. But for the price (I think I bought them for $800 from B&H), they didn't seem to deliver, especially now that I'm listening to an HD650 I picked up for $300. Amazingly good, as you know ;)

I have missed my old d5k since I sold it about 3 years ago. But after finding headphones with much better mids I could never being myself to go back.

This headphone has a lot of appeal for me. I'll be ready to order on Friday.

Hey talking about the cups that he sells, how do you know about the sales and where on the site does it show them?

Is anyone else concerned that all Fostex did with this was take the TH600, swap purdy wood cups, and throw on the old Denon pads?

hhh well for $399 I suppose that's not a bad price. it would also appear they changed out the pads a little as well. Either way I'm still in

Why would we be concerned with that? Upgrade the cups, change the pads, and sell a headphone for half price? How dare they!

If you read the OP (in this thread or the other) you'll see that Massdrop/Fostex did spend some time retuning it. All FWIW. We can assume that more than a few similarities exist between the two models. I would wager they are in fact using the same driver element.

I'm about 90% sure they're the same driver element. If you swap the earpads to Brainwavz HM5 pads, it sounds almost exactly like the TH600 did with them (the only perceptible differences likely attributable to the slightly different foam ring around the driver and wood cups).

how do they compare sound-wise to the hd650? I've been wanting to get a pair and found one for ~$330, but saw this and am wondering if it worth getting instead?

@Luckbad...are you referring to velour or leather hm5 pads?
