It's like that with all the current Microsoft 'apps' (what used to be called 'programs'): they're all about look & feel, style over substance. The capabilities are generally there, but if you should dare to want to do what MS considers out of the ordinary, good luck trying to find them.
I sync everything using OneDrive and OneDrive for business and then back up the local version as well. Just make sure you are syncing full files down to your machine and not saving space by using symbolic links. It's not hard to do. https://support.office.com/en-us/onedrive
Removed OneDrive. If making simple manual back-ups to an external drive are such an annoying process, Microsoft can keep its junk. This is not acceptable.
Microsoft's design philosophy is "Do it our way or not at all."
Unless you are held hostage by software that you really, really, can't substitute or replace, jump ship. Get out of there. Life will feel better. Cleaner. Even, easier!
