    **Some Spoilers**

Saw it at the Chinese theater in Hollywood, amazing A/V. The whole movie felt rushed and not enough character development to really care about the characters. Just seemed like a rehash of the previous movies. Han takes down the shields yet again, a "super" deathstar, a son that goes to the dark side.. , yawn. It's a visually stunning looking movie though. Can't wait to see what happens with the fallen stormtrooper and the redemption of Kylo Ren.

For me it felt like the whole movie was a "Best of" from the original trilogy. The whole thing was predictable and I became bored about half way in. At least the prequels were original. I wonder what Lucas had in mind for the sequel trilogy instead of these Disney fan made rehashes. The whole thing felt like fan-fiction. Oh, and Kylo Ren has to be the worst villain ever. Maul, Dooku, Vadar, and the Emperor would take him out in an instant.

As much of the complaints there are centered around Kylo Ren, I think he's a more complex and emotional villain than Darth Vader was if we're going off just one movie per trilogy. Darth Vader has the advantage of character development through 6 movies (as much as I hate to bring into consideration the prequels), hell it wasn't even until the 2nd episode that we got some development in his character. All of these complaints about lack of character development or depth-- let's just wait until the trilogy is completed.

For what it's worth, I actually like that Kylo Ren is force strong, but very rough around the edges when it comes to fighting. He has the raw power to stop a laser blast with the force, but he isn't skilled enough yet to hang in a lightsaber duel. I also like his tantrums and fanboyish desires. It's far more colorful than what we got out of Darth Vader in A New Hope.

I think JJ Abrams with this particular episode was sort of a tip of the hat to the old Lucas films, had he gone off and done his own thing, which would've made more sense than trying to superglue the old farts with the young guns and bridging the story, then a ton of people would've bitched and moan that it had nothing to do with the original.

But now we have characters that did have very little character development but the mystery around Rey's character leads me to believe that this will be covered in the next episode. SPOILER ALERT ::::::

Is Rey Kylo Ren's sister? Is she Luke's daughter? So many questions need to be filled in and the fact that she learned about the force on the fly was pretty damn cool, left a mark on Kylo Ren's mug. Yes Kylo Ren was a whinny little chump that had something to prove and he got his ass beat by a girl but this type of being knocked down could lead his character into a massive beast that is pure evil. We're seeing Kylo Ren in his vulnerable moments which should make for a good building block to the future episodes.

BTW, someone answer this question for me. Is the entire series written and already in books or are they making this stuff up as they go along now?

Except the prequels weren't original. "It's like poetry, it rhymes".

Rey will be Ben's twin sister, or whatever. And he'll be redeemed, also family. There, just saved everybody five years and millions of dollars.

She had no issue whatsoever, but she first saw the trilogy at age 4 and is also fond of scenes from Jurrasic Park where the dinosaurs eat people. She may be a special case...aka I've raised a deranged little girl. :p

But, I'd try the original trilogy out on her first. If she can make it through Empire, then she'll be alright. Luke loses a hand and Han is frozen solid. That's up there with most of what the see in FA save the opening village scene. Plus, she'll get more out of it if she knows the characters going in.

Also to consider, many of my friends with kids have reported that the trailers were actually more disturbing to the kids than the movie itself. Warcraft and Independence Day to be specific.

I was also disappointed by this new film. To me it felt like a modern remake of the originals. It was safe play to rehash the storyline and characters. It keeps the old fanboy's happy by including the original gang and introduce Star Wars to a new generation. The finale was blowing up the "Death Star" again...yawn. How incompetent do the villains have to be to continuously have the rebels figure out how to destroy them in about five minutes? I would have been way more interested if the attack failed.

I am probably alone in this but I still really enjoy the prequels. I liked seeing an interpretation of society before the Empire. I always thought seeing how the Jedi order functioned was really cool. At least it wasn't the same old shit from the first films.

I'd rather Rey be Luke's illegitimate daughter from a bout of drunken whoring after the shit hit the fan at the Jedi preschool.

I'm with you Stapsy, the prequels get more flack than what they deserve-- particularly from the old generation Star Wars die-hards, the same guys who are giving JJ Abrams's movie flack for being too like the originals.

I say all this as a kid who grew up watching the original trilogy at least 50 times.

But what about Kaiju Ewoks? That would be amazing. I would watch a movie about them (I loved the made for TV Ewok movie as a kid).

This movie seemed like it was about launching a bunch of story lines and not so much about being a great movie in itself. It wasnt terrible, but others have said, little to no character development, too many conveniences in resolving huge plot challenges, etc.

That being said, I do find myself genuinely interested in follow on movies because i do want to know what happens with all of the newly introduced characters. I think there's a lot there and now that they've bridged the gap from the old trilogy to the new movies, we can move on and learn more about the characters individually.

If you enjoyed the prequels, did you watch the Mr. Plinkett reviews of them? I thought his reviews were infinitely more enjoyable than the prequels themselves and are almost the length of a full movie themselves.

I actually the movie was quite good. The nostalgia factor was strong with this movie but it's only the first movie and definitely too early to judge the series on. We know that the younger characters will eventually carry the movie and we haven't really seen the back story on Rey but Fin's backstory seemed well thought out. If you take a look solely on the movies this is a good start for the future but there may be some questions. If you have also read the books as well there are a lot that this movie questions.

I agree that the whole Death Star thing seems played out in the series. It's meant to be the ultimate weapon of the empire but for the movies I think adding space combat (imperial destoryers etc) would be a good idea and maybe we will see that later. From a comparison regarding the books and the movies the world is much more vast and hope they are going to add certain races like the Hutt's and the Wookies to the films.

The other thing I liked about the movie is the emotion of the dark side being a much bigger factor this time around (well done much better than the prequels). When you compare the power of Darth Vader to say Kylo Ren you can't help but think it seems like Kylo is stronger but I think that the original trilogy or even the prequels didn't do either the force or dark side justice regarding the power moves each side is capable of or even the power level of both sides.

The movie needed a yellow dog named Jake with stretchy powers. Now that would have been cool.

I liked the movie quite a bit. It was a fun adventure in the Star Wars universe and the characters Rey, Fin and Kylo Ren I think are interesting. There was a lot of stuff to tie it too the other movies, but whatever, that was fun.

The thing that's missing the most for me is a thick sense of mythos. There was so much mystery and intrigue about the world of the original trilogy that this movie doesn't have much of. I'm hoping the next movie has lots of it.

I dunno, it wasn't in the same caliber as the original trilogy, but I enjoyed it as that was about what I expected.
