i think I've narrowed it down to the osprey quasar, or the north face recon, both seem like they aren't too big, but can still hold some notebooks and a textbook or 2 as well.
Can't speak for those but this one has been solid for me for several graduate school years, especially if you carry a laptop around. Notebook and a couple textbooks no problem
Big fan of Timbuk2 bags here. I've had a Swig for a while and - as someone that has to haul a lot of shit around for teaching and grad school - that thing has held up better than any other bag I've used.
I've got a $30 Jansport bag that I've used for a few years. If things fall apart I just sew or tape it back together. I make a point not to spend much over $50 on any piece of clothing or thing made of cloth.
Using a Blackhawk bag. Comfortable and, based on the experience of regular army friends, longlasting as well, but pricey. Tried to use my seven year old converse backpack when I first started college but realised I couldn't return to the ergonomics of "civilian" bags.
Thanks for all the ideas, I actually decided the recon and the quasar were too large as well. It's hard to get a good idea of size from product shots, so I was going and finding reviews on YouTube for quite a few.
Thule makes great backpacks that survive more than most regular backpacks for reasonable prices. Also the back padding and comfortable straps make the great for every day use.
Think I've narrowed it down to the Osprey Slapjack or the TimBuk2 Swig, thanks Austin!, it took me a while to be able to move past traditional looking backpacks, but I can't go with one of the full-on hipster bags.
Cizx, those mission workshop bags look incredible, but that's a little out of my price range.
Yeah just look for whatever fits. I'm not exceedingly tall or anything so the 0 was good. If you're over 5'10 the 1 is best probably. They also have like sleeker and cheaper ones I think that are more designed for school and stuff. They're freaking indestructible though. Use it for everything.
I use a Mission Workshop Vandal. It's not the best for compartmentalisation though, and I do envy the GoRucks' ability to open flat. I'm getting a GoRuck when my Vandal dies on me...which will probably be when I have grandchildren.
I use a modified osprey pixel at work (they made some custom modifications including magnetic clasps instead of clips). I've been through at least a dozen of the top pick packs in the last 10 years and this is my favorite by far.
I was looking at the pixel as well, since it's a bit smaller than the Slapjack I believe. But it didn't look big enough for a notebook or two and a textbook. Would you say it is? Also how does one get the custom version?
