I would pass on anything using the Pioneer stable platter mechanism. I had the best implementation of it ever and it was still mediocre as a transport.
Wow I did not know that. Guess I need to start doing some more homework on the different mechs in order to make a smart purchase. Did you ever sell that CAL Delta?
Yes it did sell locally. The mechanism is only one part of the transport quality, more important is the S/PDIF output stage and power supply. But the PSP mechanism seems to consistently result in a damped sound lacking in natural harmonics.
This should probably go in the CDP thread but people looking for CD transports should just buy something modern production. Onkyo C7030, Marantz CD6006 or Cambridge CXC will all get the job done. After researching vintage players for the better part of a year there are few I would actually want to buy and those have gone up in price due to scarcity.
I very much appreciate being able to soak up as much of the knowledge you gained during all that research. I have also sort of been holding out hope that a Schiit cd transport will pop out of Mike's brain... I know it's in the works and I'm sure it will be one hell of a transport coming from one of the godfathers of digital. Probably worth just waiting for it!
@k4rstar Of those newer models you listed, will the marantz or cambridge significantly outperform the Onkyo as transports only? Asking since the price difference is significant.
Never compared them directly so couldn’t really say. They all use the same Sanyo mechanism found in most modern CD players. However the Cambridge is designed with a singular function in mind which is to act as a transport and has their own servo tech found in their top of the line player. It’s probably the best on transport duty.
FWIW famish99 has it hooked up to Gungnir Multibit A1/Aficionado and I thought it sounded great, but I have no frame of reference, since I have not heard Af hooked up to any other transport.
