Speaking from experience, don't use pencil because it may be rendered illegible after a bit. Also no water-based inks since those could have trouble adhering to page if skin oils impregnate the paper.

Keeping a diary helps perspective and documentation. Bit embarrassing to come back to some things, but fun!
