    Think so, and it's a big part of why my preferences are more along dynamics (much as I love how lithe planar bass can be)

    Yup. It isn’t due to frequency response. E-stats with their feather light diaphragms are worse still, stiffer the dynamic diaphragm the better, and it increases the more closed the cup is. Magnet strength and acoustic materials are also factors.

    Thank you for the information. I ask because I recently acquired an LCD2C w/ vegan pads and I'm quite disappointed with their bass performance. Makes me appreciate my HD650s a lot more.

    Are the vegan pads faux leather, or something more air permeable? I forgot to say that pads make just as much difference as how open/closed the cup is.

    If I'm looking at the correct pads, they're leather-free microsuede.
    The 650s bass distortion is probably helping in this regard as well.
