(I am poking fun— while I've yet to get ears on a planar I really love the tech is still somewhat intriguing. Still as you noted electrodynamics have been around for longer so they've got most of the wrinkles in their diaphragms ironed out :P)
I was about to immediately say that was a bad idea, haha. I admit envying some of the loaner tours that go around but sometimes I get ears on nice things at meets— pretty happy with what I have at the moment, just curiosity and addressing nitpicks to presentation and voicing keeping my attention. Do appreciate the gesture though, I know who to ask if I find a cheap one near death and need modding advice!
@Abhishek Chowdhary you have some of the modern planars, yes? Would love to hear your thoughts on how the old guards compare! Maybe using the gen 1 Bifrost MB as a source since I know what that sounds like, haha
Guru knows what he’s doing with the Yammies. That T50rp though I should say isn’t as good as the T50rp can be. Incomplete mod and I don’t think Guru is using the pads they were tuned for but you’ll get a taste :) they don’t need expensive gear to shine either. The Yamahas like power.
@rhythmdevils Can I dare to apply for the modded YH3 you just mentioned? I am also a little curious as unmodded Fostex t50s didn't impress me much.. But based on what you said, unmodded vintages were far from its full potential right? Want to figure out their capabilities myself.
@rhythmdevils : I did get the pads you recommended. Even if incomplete, they are still the best T50rp I have heard. It always amazes me how we seem to have closed in on the same 'goal' sitting across continents and with such different headphones.
Great to see you here Guru! That’s the great thing about sending you a pair of headphones now we have something physical to compare to. It is amazing that we both have aimed for and (almost?) found that same sound.
...I know I haven’t found it completely but I know it’s there. I can hear it in my head but have yet to fully realize it in an ortho. Wish you could hear the Yh3 I just modded. It’s better than my last one. And I wish I could hear one of your favorites. Damn continents
@Vtory yeah sure. I’ll probably send it to Purr1n too. But I’m just starting to mod orthos again after a health induced 8 year hiatus from music and headphones. So I’ve got a few things to finish before I want to send them anywhere. Soon!
Oh, I have heard that T50 once previously. Looks like RD hasn't heard other commercial T50 interations because this T50 beat them all , they all were embarrassing @Lyander - I've auditioned almost all commercial Planars/Dynamics/estats except for Abyss and TOTL Hifimans (Arya/Susvara), and yet here I have five aniso HP1s
Short version is there appears to be a stronger consensus (than I'd expected) that modern planars cannot hold a candle to the old Yamaha makes? Well I'm just glad I don't have quite enough to splurge on one now lol, just checked used prices on the Bay
@Abhishek Chowdhary thanks for the kind words! I put so much work and just plain old love into that mod! You’re right I haven’t heard other modded T50rp’s because I wanted to offer mine as a commercial product but had to stop just before finalizing it unfortunately...
I've heard many T50RP mods - LFF Paradox Slant, ZMF early lineup, MR Speakers early lineup, even the old Smeggy Thunderpants. They've always just been ok but I admire your resolve and respect for the older cans I haven't been fortunate to hear. Maybe if I had entered the hobby a decade earlier I'd have a different perspective.
@E_Schaaf my posts in the he5xx thread weren’t directed at you. I’d love to hear your modded electrodynamic Fostex someday they sound good by your descriptions. But I didn’t sign up for the loaner because I can’t really use full size headphones right now and you’re better off with people who know the competition and market and might buy one. Or write a meaningful review.
It's ok, learning is collaborative! We are on the same team not loving neo planars (despite the ridiculous amount of effort I put into modding many of them). Maybe it's not fair for me to write off the general tech so quickly. I did love my Maggie 3.6R's when I had them... I'm glad the story aspect of planar design is finally coming forward, I really do value the context you've provided.
I should have waited and started a thread about it instead of responding to your post. A lot of people say the same I just read your post at a time when I felt like writing about it. Definitely on the same team! I can tell you’ve spent a lot of time trying to fix/improve headphones and I respect that. Someday I’m sure I’ll hear one of your creations.
