Makes sense to me. If you want to play vinyl, you must have a turntable, cart, etc. If you want to play digital, so many devices have built in DAC chips that the idea of a standalone DAC box wouldn't even cross most people's minds. I doubt most people even consider how a digital signal becomes an analog signal in the first place.
Yes, but do fewer people own external phono stages or DACs? Most of the mass consumer tier tables have built in phonos. People like all in one solutions. They buy based on the experience instead of the components...?
@E_Schaaf There’s a reason I didn’t mention phono pre. If it’s not built into the table it’s likely built into the integrated amp the table is feeding into.
Like Merrick said, any time I tell people I have a DAC and then start to explain what it is to people, they just get this dumb blank look on their face, at first wondering why that's even necessary, and then after I explain, "why do you have a totally separate box to do that?"
Yep - Single-box integrateds and AVRs are the gig at the mainstream. I have a hard enough time explaining to people why I have separate amps for headphones. I get looked at like I'm from Mars if I start talking about DACs and CD Transports.
Maybe this got lost a bit with my initial comment but this was mainly in context with the link to Architectural Digest. I don’t remember lifestyle articles about listening rooms for digital music but it’s a thing for vinyl
